I have an iPad 2 wifi only and the full blown Sky Demon (with all the add ons). I think it's a fab piece of software for planning, but I'm having a nightmare with it in Nav mode.

I bought a bad elf pro (the separate device, not plug in) to provide Sky Demon with GPS data. It has a screen on the GPS unit so you can see the read out (which is good as an ultimate last resort and back up!).

I've connected the two via Bluetooth fine and used the Bad Elf app on the iPad to see the output of the GPS unit which works fine.

When I go into Sky Demon in "Go Flying" mode it shows as a red aircraft symbol which I understand means that GPS data is not being fed to Sky Demon at least once a second.

When I connect my ipad by wifi, the aircraft turns yellow and it seems to work and being provided by GPS data.

I have ensured that Location Services for Sky Demon are switched on.

I've searched the forums and tried various Privacy resets, and checking setting with no solution.

I'm desperate to get this sorted, so any help would be appreciated.

Hi Jay,

I thought mine was working but it isn't. So we have again the same problem.

I asked again both SkyDemon and a person at Garmin aviation if they can advise on what to do now.

Pretty frustrating this stuff isn't working.

I also tried the app GPS data but my app stays 'empty' even with connected GLO and wifi is off. It does not receive any data. I guess you will have the same problem.

Are you both on the latest iOS (6.1.3)

Please try this:-

Go into Bluetooth and 'forget' your device

Privacy > Location Services and turn off Find My iPad
Privacy > Location Services > System Services and turn everything off except Status Bar Icon
Privacy > Location Services and double check that SkyDemon and GPS Data are definitely ON

Hard reboot your device (press and hold Volume + Home together until you see the Apple logo)

When the unit boots back up, confirm that the Location Services icon is not present in the status bar. If it appears, you missed something above.

Re-add the GPS device via Bluetooth menu

Open the GPS Data app I linked to above (do not open any native Garmin or Bad Elf app). You should see the location services icon appear in the status bar, and hopefully get a flashing red dot.

What I have found (and this is entirely theoretical) is that if one of the system services tries to access location data before your bluetooth device is connected, then it just doesn't work.

@ Stevelup

I am using version 6.1.3.

I did your tests and found that both the 'GPS data' and Skydemon are now working fine without wifi. The red dot is flickering multiple times per second. The GPS data is changing while moving and also the groundspeed in Skydemon and other variables show values.

It looks like you solved my problem! Many thanks! Really great!

I am curious if it will remain like this. I am flying tomorrow so let's see what happens!

Good news. Skydemon is working perfect so is the data app! It worked excellent!

Your solution works Stevelup!

Many thanks for your help!

Now I am curious how everything will continue to work once I will put more Location services back to 'on'. We'll see!

Jay how is it going with your issue?

It's all moderately useless stuff so I wouldn't worry too much about turning it back on!

For the record, the only one I have turned off though is 'Automatically set time zone' - that fixed it for me. It also increased battery life.

The important thing is to make sure the location services arrow is not visible on the screen before you pair the bluetooth device. Turning the above stuff of just helps you take control of that.
