Hello,
About Italian FMC: here you can find the AIC document which describes them, as well as the ENR docs which shows their geometry.
Their borders follows parts of other airspaces boundaries, and, as has already been correctly pointed out, they are mandatory.
Regards,
Massimo Belloni

Have you found it shown on an ICAO chart at all?
For Italy the FMCs are not depicted on the ICAO charts - but those are rubbish for many reasons and not used by anyone. The "official" FMC charts are hidden in the AIP ENR 6.4.1 & ENR 6.4.3 for Milan and Rome FIR respectively. It wouldn't be Italy if it was straight forward, but nevertheless those FMCs are mandatory AFAIK.

I was not aware of the issue until I read the thread, so thanks to the poster.
My current ICAO charts do show them:

Are these mandatory FMCs, or voluntary (as in the UK)? Do they ever overlap?
I’d be happier to see them on the virtual radar, rather than add further small print clutter to the chart.

In fact I have not. But it is displayed in Skydemon hidden at the frequencies. So why not showing them on the map, where it makes sense for the planing and while flying?
