Colour High Terrain doesn’t tell you how high you need to climb to - It just tells you +/- 500’. For crossing a ridge, you need at least 1000’, or 2000’+ if there is significant wind. At altitude, 2000’ can take several minutes to climb due to decreased performance, so you need to be able to plan ahead. To plan ahead you need to know your target number, and that number may change throughout the flight depending on the conditions.
The terrain colouring is nice, but it doesn’t allow you to specify a target height or choose a ridge crossing point. It’s nice for general awareness, but ultimately I’d need to know my specific crossing altitude in numbers.
