I'd like to see the rain overlay during navigation as well. Flying mostly between 2,000 and 3,000 ft AGL I get an internet connection every 10-15 mins, on one of my last flights I received new metars in 6,000 ft AGL.
My suggestion: A time lapse loop (as already suggested by geohawk) with 15-20 mins looking into the future (prediction, like many weather apps already do) while in nav mode. Accompanied by a small label on the display showing time of last update. If last update is older than say 20-30 mins, label turns red.
I know, no information is better than wrong information, but if the information is marked as outdated and the loop is still running I may get an idea about how the precipitation has moved and developed.
A time-out is ok, but not the way geohawk describes it. If the rain layer is switched off due to time-out and only allowed to being switched on again when there's an internet connection, one would always have to have an eye on the display to see whether internet connection is established in order to switch on the rain layer again.
Regards
Eric
