The Wind instrument can toggle only between two info steps: Wind information (direction/speed) and HDWIND/TLWIND. It would be very useful to have a 3rd info step: XWIND (cross wind).

Would you need it to say which direction the wind was coming from, in order to be useful? How would you imagine the reading looking?

It could be displayed as XWINDL/XWINDR, the first one indicataing the XWIND is from your left side, etc.

However, what about using the Garmin 1000 approach, where one of the displays shows the wind with two arrows with a speed number on each - one indicating the HDWIND (TLWIND) component, the other indicating the XWIND component. With this option you immediately see both components on the same display. So may be you simply could replace today's HDWIND/TLWIND display with this two-arrow display?

I think a speed would be sufficient as whether it is from the left or right is pretty obvious ( or at least easy to mentally judge!). It might be more helpful to indicate which runway the crosswind component applies to.

Just suggestions:

Use wind instrument as at present with additional 3rd display mode:

Mode 1) Wind as vector e.g. 120/15 plus wind barb
Mode 2) Head/tail wind (HDWIND 15 or TLWIND 12)
Mode 3) Crosswind displayed as "XWIND L 15" or "XWIND R 10"

Change options as present by tapping on the instrument.

Alternatively combine options 2 & 3 into one and display as "WIND H15 L27" indicating 15kts headwind & 27 Xwind from the Left

I think XWIND direction definitely should be included, just like HDWIND/TLWIND. Direction is not necessarily obvious if you make a lot of turns. Direction should be clear by just a quick look.

I still think it is highly preferable to combine mode 2 & 3 so both XWIND and HDWIND/TLWIND are there on the same display, using the Garmin 1000 approach as I suggested. Two arrows take less space than text and are very informative.

Tapping an instrument to have it display different modes is nice, but it becomes less convenient if there are too many view steps. So since mode 1 + mode 2&3 combined display the same information as mode 1 + mode 2 + mode 3, the former is better.

I'm not familiar with the G1000 and can't visualise the type of display you're talking about. Would somebody care to mock it up?

I have made a picture, but when I try to attach the jpg file to my reply, the popup window for selecting the file is halfway hidden behind the SD banner, so I can't see where to type in the link. I tried both Firefox and Internet Explorer, both with same problem. Seems you have an issue with your web page here. Any way I can mail the picture to you?
