I think XWIND direction definitely should be included, just like HDWIND/TLWIND. Direction is not necessarily obvious if you make a lot of turns. Direction should be clear by just a quick look.
I still think it is highly preferable to combine mode 2 & 3 so both XWIND and HDWIND/TLWIND are there on the same display, using the Garmin 1000 approach as I suggested. Two arrows take less space than text and are very informative.
Tapping an instrument to have it display different modes is nice, but it becomes less convenient if there are too many view steps. So since mode 1 + mode 2&3 combined display the same information as mode 1 + mode 2 + mode 3, the former is better.
