Having used the WINCE and iPad version in flight I have to say that the software is outstanding and provides a level of reassurance which could lead to a reliance solely on SD rather than the formal training; maps and position fixing recommended by the CAA training programme. After all GPS based navigation is not to be the primary source of navigation, or so they say!

Although the iPad version of SD is far superior to the WINCE setup it will truly come of age when it also has the INSTRUMENT VIEW currently only available on the PC/WINCE platform.

Finally, it made me laugh the other day when I was approaching Lydd and the only GPS unit that still had satellite coverage wasn't the £8000 GARMIN unit; with twiddley knobs to do everything with mounted in the flight panel; but the yoke mounted "touch me" iPad trundling along doing what is does best NAVIGATING IN 3D and presenting that data in an idiot proof graphical form which is quick and easy to digest.

Verdict -- I like it. Come on give us the INSTRUMENT VIEW for the iPad

I've also updated and restarted my iPad, but I can see no additional tabs - should there be another alongside the Tafs, etc? How do I check what version I'm running?

Just pull out the heading indicator at the bottom of the screen and it becomes an HSI instrument on your map. You can drag it to whatever position you want to. You can also drag it back to its original position as well. Very nifty bit of coding by the team Smile

What an elegant solution! Fabulous to now have this on the iPAD. Great software getting better all the time. What more could one want? (Although, being the greedy buggers we are, I'm sure we'll think of something soon. Synthetic Vision and Highway in the Sky?)

Used SD for the first time yesterday and was very pleased.

Just updated my iPad version to 2.3.3 and the only issue with the "free floating" HSI is if you rotate the iPad from landscape to vertical with the HSI on the RHS of the screen the HSI can't be seen.

Not sure how often I plan to rotate the iPad in flight but perhaps the HSI should be returned to it's default position at the bottom of the screen whenever the iPad is rotated?

In the meantime, many thanks for a great app.
