Well, we cannot force national authorities to give ICAO designators to smaller airfields.

But you're right, we could make the local identifiers work for user document lookup. The only potential problem with this is that local identifiers are not internationally unique. But if you don't care about this, neither do we. We will make those identifiers work for user document lookup in the next version, and hopefully that will solve the issue for you.

The ICAO designator is by request ! (That's Italy !)
Few years back, I was the first to obtain the LIQQ designator for Serristori‌, took me about one year....
‌Many others aviosuperfici owners liked the idea and they follow us, ENAC assigned a designator to many other aviosuperfici (small airports), but not all aviosuperfici owners, understand the advantage of having an ICAO designator.
‌Today the situation become little difficult, the man  in charge at ENAC retired, so is not easy, anymore, to obtain a code.
The "Italian weather service" (military) they are using many ICAO designator for meteo station not located on airports, sometime are maritime weather stations, sometime on top of a mountain, this is since 60 years and not easy to change.
‌At the end, the lack of codes become not sufficients to be assigned to the hundred of aviosuperfici.
‌The other problem is avioportolano editor who invented these code, first 2 letters are the initials of Province City nearby and numbers are progressive.‌ Jeppesen is using another code system, but I never understand how it work.

I agree, identifiers are not unique‌, plus few pilots add plates to they SkyDemon and only few know the possibility, so if is simple job we will appreciate, if is to complicate do not worry about.
regards, Gianni‌

How will you consider the cases without an ICAO type indicator, as Estartit, Sallent Club Pla de Bages and many, many others ? In Spain there are hundreds ...
