Nobody told me that I would receive the updates or that the plates would be the updated ones. I just assumed it, I just thought that Skydemon would not sell outdated plates. My mistake.
I'm just saying that I wont buy again a SkyDemon-un-updated version, I'll buy an AFE-on-paper-with-updates version. Not a big deal.

Have you seen it published anywhere that you would receive any kind of update service with the SkyDemon access to the AFE 2012 flight guide?

We have tried to be very clear that what you are purchasing is access to the printed AFE 2012 guide plates and nothing more.

AFE flight guide purchasers receive free regular updates until the next year version is released.
I thought when I purchased SD AFE guide that I would get the same updates.
It should be made clear to purchasers of SD-AFE 2012 that they will not receive that service. If I had known that I would not have bought it.

you should be able to download any plate during flight if you have cell reception

Unlikely in the extreme, I would have thought.

And with an unexpected diversion, needing more than one airfield, so much simpler to have everything available on the iPad (like Pooley's) or the paper edition. The iPad isn't that convenient to triple task (fly the a/c, navigate, search for airfield info) in my experience.

If you set the communications options to "Live during planning and flight" you should be able to download any plate during flight if you have cell reception.

Very disappointed with the AFE flight guide for SD. You still have to carry the hard copy, if you don't download any airfields before flight you can't access them.
So having to make a sudden diversion is a problem.
Have written to SD along with other colleagues encountering the same problem.
Got a standard reply that said it's not possible to have access to a complete AFE pdf file of all plates at present.
Waste of money, will not be updating to 2013.

Tim - I plan my flight at home on the PC and transfer to an IPAD for flying. Appropriate AFE plates are downloaded and are ready for when Im about to land. But if I were to change plans I need internet to download more AFE plates which isnt always available once out and about. Is there anyway to download all the plates and store them in Skydemon? Thanks john

No it couldn't, the 2013 AFE plates will supercede the 2012 ones as soon as they are released in December. The updating cycle to those hasn't been fully decided yet, so just stay tuned. The 2012 plates have proved to be amazingly popular among subscribers.

I think the arrangement for the AFE Guide needs a bit of careful thought, both from SD and AFE.

The paper AFE guide has monthly amendments, and I think I am correct in saying these are not fed through in the electronic version.

In addition the 2013 paper edition comes out at the beginning of December, so it isn't overly attractive to purchase at this time of year.

Personally, I would prefer to see a Pooley's type of deal, where one can download the whole guide (using, say, Goodreader) and have it permanently available for browsing and one could synch regularly. Just because one sets out from A to B with alternate C doesn't mean you're not going to want info on D and E, especially if decisions are being made when airborne.

Having said that, I'd always prefer to have both versions, or at least when the electronic version is updated and available in complete form.

Surely the main advantage of electronic data is to have the most up-to-date info transmitted as soon as it's available. SD chart updates are a good example of best practice. At present the AFE info via SD could be easily over 12 months old - if not longer.
