Does Skydemon mobile (MD or otherwise) provide an OBS hold feature, a la Garmin Aera/196?

My trust Lowrance Airmap 1000 has died (and anyway the database updates have dried up) so I am hoping Father Christmas will oblige with a new GPS. I need to know what to put on my list... and the Skydemon looks great (I've downloaded the demo version). But I use the Lowrance to 'monitor' NDB approaches setting the active waypoint to the NDB and the OBS to the outbound/inbound track (great for holds, too as it makes every NDB basically a VOR/DME...)

I can't find a way to do this. If it's not there, can it be added, please..?

I don't even know what an "OBS hold" is, could you explain how it works?

Works like a VOR receiver. You can select the inbound or outbound course to/from the waypoint, and guidance is provided relative to that radial, rather than to the flightplanned course between waypoints.

I see, thanks. This is certainly something we'd consider adding though it seems more suited for IFR-style flying. I'll be interested to see what other people think of the idea.

I was taught to use Obs hold for creating a run in line to a DZ waypoint when para dropping. Makes life really easy and a "must have" for me even though a VFR activity. Good tip re the NDB too! Otherwise Skydemon looks really good for my impending GPS replacement; I already use the "light" version for UK VFR planning.

Actually a very nice idea. My motto is: Good for IFR=Good for VFR.
IFR is simply the GUI of VFR.

PS: GUI= Graphic User Interface (For those who need help only!)

Found this thread while searching to see if it was already available and I just didnt know how to use it.

I would find this feature very useful.

I would like to see this feature too. Is there somehow we could campaign for it?
The OBS feature is useful not just for IFR work.

As a previous post explains. You can project a continuous radial line, through a chosen waypoint.

You simply require:
Waypoint
Radial, in degrees, From

The continuous line intersects the waypoint in the chosen direction, and can then be tracked 'TO' or 'FROM'
It is similar to a runway extended centre line feature.

Sometimes requested in controlled airspace, 'on reaching beacon, fly a track of 060'
Useful for approaching a waypoint in a certain direction
Frequently required for para dropping.

I have read posts in Forums where customers have gone with other systems as SD does not currently support this.

Would really like this feature.

Could you point to one of those posts, please?

You can create relative waypoints in SkyDemon, so you could create a waypoint on a radial from any other waypoint, and then plan a route along that radial. The HSI instrument (in fact all instruments) would then guide your flight along that leg following the radial.

I also think that the posibility to set the OBS to any value is very useful, even in VFR.
I used that a lot in the past (!), with FLIGHTMASTER witch was a great software for PALM OS.

But it is true that today, with
the beautiful moving maps we have, interest is lower ....

Have good flights ...

In reply to Tim Dawson, here is one customer sticking to Garmin for OBS hold.
Third post down on this pprune forum March 2013 tmmorris:
http://www.pprune.org/private-flying/510967-saving-imc-did-we-do-enough-can-we-do-more-5.html

We need accuracy to 10 degrees, so that's 36 waypoints for any parachute dropping zone.
Fly at a few airfields, and that's a lot of user waypoints and very cumbersome.

There seems to be a lot of likes to this thread now.

Any news Skydemon?

I count perhaps eight people supporting the addition of this feature on this thread in over 2.5 years. Couple that with the fact we haven't received any direct demand for the feature (email, phone etc) and I'm afraid that simply isn't very compelling. We do not attempt to be all things to all people.

I would def be interested in this function. I can only imagine that others would also subscribe to your fab software if you could set an OBS function and alarms ie dme to an airfield.. this would be very very useful for parachute flying.. appreciate you guys are busy. would it be a lot of work?
