If you are an Android user, download yourself a copy of GPS-ILS. This will allow you to create an ILS to any point in space, at any altitude.

Much safer than doing pseudo instrument flying into VFR airfields, and you can practice in real IMC as well, with no terrain issues nor sleepless nights for Tim.

I still would like to see an option to turn it OFF. You can make a warning/disclaimer message with "I agree" checkbox nearby.

I believe that there are legal liability issues if the pseudo ILS does not cut off below 500ft

Why would you want to do that on a VFR application?


 I have extremely accurate external RTK GNSS receiver and I want to practice ILS-like approaches, because I don't have any instrument approaches near my area (don't worry, I do them only in VMC). Why not just make it optional in settings ?

It works where we have precise coordinates and elevation data for a runway's thresholds. You can determine whether this is the case by performing a pretend approach in the simulator, and ascertaining whether the ILS mode kicks in.

I agree with the above but I was merely asking which airfields it should work on as I could not get it to work at beverley or wickenby yesterday despite me moving the hsi to the main screen.

Does it just work of you are landing on a certain runway if you line up on the centre line of one? We were in excellent vmc of course.

However, the pseudo-ILS will work for many airfields that do not actually have an ILS, since it operates on runway threshold positions and elevation. It does not rely on terrain data in any way; it is designed purely to guide you to a runway threshold (or to 500' above it, for the vertical component).


It was a bit misleading of me to mention terrain data and pseudo-ILS in one sentence. I merely wanted to caution people to fly with their eyes glued to the display and relying on the vertical cross-section for terrain avoidance. This can be extremely dangerous, particularly in mountainous terrain.

The decision to stop the pseudo-Glide Slope Indicator below 500 ft is wise, in my opinion.

As an aid to get into proper position for landing, the pseudo-ILS can be a helpful tool which enhances positional awareness. But that's about as far as I would be prepared to go.
