Hi there,

I've just purchased SkyDemon and been reading about trying to find decent hardware to run it on.

I've just tested it on my old Sony Xperia X1 phone and it works fine on that, but the phone is rubbish, very very small screen, awful battery life.

I'm about to go for the Navigon 8410, but its seems very pricey for a Sat Nav.

I could get a Samsung NB30 netbook (or similar?) with touch screen and dongle for not much more.

Surely running Skydemon on a netbook on the passenger seat would be as good as the navigon? I know I cannot mount the netbook, but the battery life is about 11 hours and it also means I get another laptop to play with when I'm at home. While a Navigon would be useless to me as I have Tom Tom and Google maps turn by turn navigation on my phone for driving.

Anyone got any ideas about it or other options I've not thought of?

I dont want to jump in and buy a device then something much better pop up that I didn't know about!

Also, using a netbook I would be using the plan software rather than the in-flight software, is one better than the other to use in the air or are they identical once the GPS mode is on on the plan software.

Cheers, Smile

Jon.

Hi Jon

I am using a Medion Netbook which has a unpolished screen which makes it anti reflective so it works quite well in moderate lighting conditions. the 10" screen is a joy and like you I fly it on the passenger seat. I power it with a Maplin Mobile charger plugged in to the cigar holder so batteries are not an issue. I have velcroed it to a knee strap but it gets in way of the stick. It has wifi so I can file flight plans at various wifi outlets at home and abroad and with Skype aboard I am sorted as they say.

It would be nice if Tim had the time and inclination to rework the program as an Android App as it would sit nicely on the new Samsung Tab which has abright 7" screen and all other modcons

I think you will need the full mobile program as the basic version only allows flight planning whilst the mobile will allow full navigation in the air. The trial version also allows aerial navigation but only for a 30min flight. Thats fair dont you think?

Decisions decisions!

I might just get the netbook anyway as I'm need of a spare lappy as my current one is getting a bit long in the tooth. Then possibly even get a navigon down the line.

Android would need a complete rework as its a linux based OS, not too dissimilar to the apple iphone OS which is based on BSD I think?

I've got a Samsung Galaxy S as one of my phones, which has a lovely super amoled display but the battery life is about half a day, abysmal.

is there much difference in the interface between the windows CE inflight and running the plan with GPS on a netbook, is there any advantage of the other system?

I also think that whatever you buy will be outdated in a month or two such are the advances in all things electronic, eventually you will just have to bite the bullet

ps: your annual subscription to whatever SKyDemon program entitles you to a full update of charts and other goodies

I have seen the progam running on an HTC mobile seems ok but the screen is a bit small for my aged eyes.

My Old Medion runs on WinXP and that works fine. As I said in an earlier reply the Rx/Antenna is a cheap Chinese unit on EBay for £4.40 plus postage!!

For what its worth, my view is that whatever you get, readability in bright conditions is the greatest priority after being able to read it at all!!

I reckon 7" is the optimum size but at present I have not found a 7" wince device with 400NIT screen. Thats the minimum IMHO.

Navigon 8410 is 5" and 400NITS. Extremely usable and stable.

I am very wary of sitting an untethered "projectile" on the P2 seat.

AS others have said, market changes every day  .. ennavi HD is supposedly 400 NITS and full HD resolution. But seems impossible to source as yet from Korea.

My 2pworth!!

To answer one of the questions posed, the interface in SkyDemon Plan when running in in-flight mode is virtually identical to that of SkyDemon Mobile running on a CE device. It's the same code.
