Any idea where to get a "John Wighton's Korean 7" device (sm-8082)". A google search comes up with lots of Korean that Google can't translate....

I bought an 11 inch Acer that is convertable to a tablet. I only have the demo version, but with a dongle it runs that very well. Same reservations about a projectile P2, and I do have a Bendix King AV80R so I generally use that, veen if that wont yet link to SkyDemon plan...

The Acer is great as a laptop, but the touch side is not wonderful as yet (this Win 7)

It is still pretty usable

Rumour has it that Microsoft will be unveiling its competition to the iPad in January at CES. This is likely to be a range of tablet PCs from different suppliers, all of similar form factor and price to the iPad. If this is true and their screens are decent, then they will probably be the ideal companions for SkyDemon.

A number of us have tried various 7 inch devices and not found the perfect solution. The X10 MID is not at all bad (though hard to find now). It runs SD, PFMS, Mem Map etc straight out of the box with no tweaking. Good battery too  .. unlike more expensive Mio v735 whose screen is only a little brighter.

John Wighton's Korean 7" device (sm-8082 I think) is still available and apparently has a 350-400nit screen. But you have to search in Korean!

So for my money, Navigon's 5" 8410 is still best bet. Works perfectly and screen is exceptional.

I purchased a few to try from chinavasion.com. I would steer away from Samsung chips though. There is still a chance you may find the same cheaper elsewhere.

For what it is worth l will add my tupence worth...

The Medion (my version is an Akoya 2110 or sim) screen is not bright enough (OK in the bottom of the pax seat but not in the normal visual field of my Europa), it is heavy and a potential projectile unless tethered, it needs a BT GPS plus a stack of leads. The AWARE unit is great running SD but l dont much like the 4.3" (small) screen as picking things is difficult. I do use a 7" UMPC device (Korean sourced but now untraceable origin) which is very visible and is possibly optimal for a small GA cockpit.

As others have said the Samsung TAB, iPad, etc are great but cannot be ported due to O/S issues.

JW

To answer one of the questions posed, the interface in SkyDemon Plan when running in in-flight mode is virtually identical to that of SkyDemon Mobile running on a CE device. It's the same code.

For what its worth, my view is that whatever you get, readability in bright conditions is the greatest priority after being able to read it at all!!

I reckon 7" is the optimum size but at present I have not found a 7" wince device with 400NIT screen. Thats the minimum IMHO.

Navigon 8410 is 5" and 400NITS. Extremely usable and stable.

I am very wary of sitting an untethered "projectile" on the P2 seat.

AS others have said, market changes every day  .. ennavi HD is supposedly 400 NITS and full HD resolution. But seems impossible to source as yet from Korea.

My 2pworth!!

My Old Medion runs on WinXP and that works fine. As I said in an earlier reply the Rx/Antenna is a cheap Chinese unit on EBay for £4.40 plus postage!!
