Your external GPS source will override the built-in one.

Thanks for the above. Having established that the iPad Mini cellular has GPS (GLONASS only) I'm curious to know whether using a Garmin GLO (both GPS and GLONASS), when Bluetoothed to the iPad Mini, is going to interfere with the internal GPS. In fact, I assume it cannot work in conjunction with the onboard GPS. The Garmin GLO was previously used in an iPad WiFi-only, and it performed OK.

As positioning in the cockpit with the iPad Mini (flat on the panel) isn't going to be ideal for line-of-sight reception, and I assume the Garmin is going to provide better information (line-of-sight reception, both satellite clusters), I'd like to find out whether one can switch-off the iPad's internal GPS and use the external only.

I mean, SkyDemon can't handle two GPS data inputs, can it?

I own an iPad Mini 2 with 3G and it works without any troubles with Skydemon.

Cheers,
Bernhard.

I'm baffled by trying to find out whether my iPad mini WiFi / Cellular has a GPS chip or not (Model No. MD542B/A, with 7.0.4 o/s).

Various geek forums say yes or no depending whether it is 3G or 4G.

Apple say it's assisted only, and their tech support were genuinely baffled by the idea that it needs satellites to use a navigation app (Satellites? Hey - you're kidding).

Another more reliable geek forum say yes, if Cellular, but Glonass only.

As it's next to impossible to establish whether it has a GPS chip or not, could anyone confirm whether in fact it's better to have an external GPS anyway? The current Garmin Glo appears to see every satellite launched, and one can position it for best reception - that has to be better than a panel-mounted integral system? Or not?

If, in fact, it turns out to have a GPS chip, does it decide which is the best input signal to use?

Thanks.

Assisted GPS is a red herring; it can still obtain a GPS fix without a 3G signal and even with no 3G card installed.

The most important thing is the model of iPad you have. If you don't have the 3G model, then you have no GPS chipset.

Hi all,

The latest iPad mini with Retina screen seems to have a MAJOR problem for aviation navigation!

The specification states Assisted GPS only which is no use if you are out of mobile phone cover. The original mini which I use for SD and other mapping apps has full GPS and Glossnas. Superb location at all times.

I have talked to the technical staff at 2 Apple stores, Leeds and Cardiff, and they confirm the published specification.

Can anybody or even Apple confirm the exact situation as if this is correct both aviators and sailors, even walkers, will have to find another tablet.

At least 2 of my club members are now in doubt re a purchase for Christmas.
