I was taught +500 ft above highest terrain/object 5nm either side of track. Then add further 300 ft for possible unmarked obstacle on top of terrain. 

So thats +800ft for terrain, +500ft for obstacle

Customer feedback. The defaults in SkyDemon are targetted at people using GPS to aid navigation, and 10 miles either side of track is too conservative.

Could I ask why you chose those parameters for the safety altitude?

The legal minimum for IFR flight being 1000ft above the highest point within 5 miles of track and for VFR I was taught to use 1000ft within 10 miles as a safety altitude.

The MSA for a leg is calculated by looking at the terrain and obstructions 4nm either side of the leg, with 1000ft clearance for obstructions and 800ft clearance for terrain. These options have been exposed ready for the forthcoming 1.4 version so you'll be able to change them then.

Could you please advise how the MSA  incorporated in the PLOG is arrived at. Can the parameters be changed. The Horizontal and Vertical Warnings dont seem to have any effect and I cant seem to find any reference in the documentation.
