You're absolutely right that it would not be much work. As you can see from this thread though, it's not something that we get asked about very often, which makes us think it probably isn't something that many people would appreciate. Perhaps others will contribute here.

Hi Tim, I'm new to Skydemon. I reviewed most of your competitor VFR navigation apps and Skydemon stands out really nice. I endorse Bernhard's view and arguments. I would also prefer to have the TOC & TOD in the lateral view, although I mostly look for it in the Virtual Radar. Because it won't need much work, just provide it as a on/off parameter. Every user happy and a small feature extra to further wide the gap with your competitors :-)

Absolutely understood, Tim! I saw your previous comment and decided to raise my voice that I would indeed like that feature very much.
Regarding whether there are many people finding that useful, I agree with your perception in general. Foreflight and Garmin Pilot e.g. are too lacking that feature. Just the built-in GPS supporting VNAV usually show a T/D indication on the map (lacking of vertical profile view though)
I cannot tell the reason, I just found a reddit thread complaining that Garmin Pilot does not feature such things and I found a video tutorial showing a workaround for Foreflight. So there is at least some demand, but I think both products did not feature the functionality as well for a reason and the "public demand" is probably a loud minority and workarounds are provided.
Nevertheless, thanks for responding so quickly to such an old thread. If you ever think about adding it, you have my word, it would make me even more happy Smile

Hi, I know this topic is quite old, but before requesting it, I thought I search existing requests.

During flight, I too use the virtual radar. But I use SkyDemon also for flight planning. Having lateral maps, I set my waypoints and route so that I can identify landmarks like woods, mountains, rivers, roads etc.

I also use to print out my flight preparation inc. maps as backup. I then either manually mark the TOD on the maps or include an additional waypoint near the TOD in Skydemon.
During planning, the TOD of course would change continuously when re-routing so that one needs to be adjusted. During flight it won't matter as there I have the virtual radar where my current position is displayed. On the map it won't change, and any deviation I make also changes my TOD I would need to consider.
But planning is something I still care about and the reason is to have a mental image, where laterally the TOD would be. The only way to find out currently is putting an artificial waypoint in the route which is then synchronized between the lateral and vertical display, or double tapping which briefly indicates the approximate position.
Having at least the option to display TOD (TOC as well? I never cared about that one too much I have to admit) also in the lateral map would significantly ease my planning to maintain situational awareness. Relying always on GPS and SkyDemon being available and thus having virtual Radar and the current airplane position at hand is a bad habit and imposes a risk.

I could imagine that it would also would help during in-flight. The current radar allows to estimate the TOD based on time and distance ahead, maybe rough terrain features. Indicating it laterally would improve also the expectation where it is in relationship to other map features better indicated on the lateral map. In-flight this means, better ability to keep ahead of the situation and less time "heads down" spent on looking on the map. More time to look outside, less risk.

I could imagine having an option to display the marks on the lateral display is not something too complicated and it would make a difference. For sure there are workarounds but SkyDemon is meant to improve on the manual workload and I think this is a low hanging fruit.
Thanks for considering!

the Top of Climb and Top of Descent points only show in the virtual radar. If correct, could I ask that they are added to the map view too please?

A double tap on the virtual radar highlights that location on the map and vice versa. Works for all points, tops and otherwise.

I rarely look at the virtual radar in flight. Great for planning, but not navigating for me.
I'm on Team Tim on this one, the virtual radar is very useful in flight. I dislike using other nav apps that don't have horizontal+vertical views at the same time. I also use an iPad Mini 4 and I find there is enough space for both views.

It sounds like a better idea would be to actually use Virtual Radar. It's an incredibly powerful feature and we don't have plans to optimise the SkyDemon experience for people who decide they don't want it. It's a core part of SkyDemon. If lots of people want those labels annotated on the main map route view we'd consider it, but I don't think it's a common request I'm afraid.

Hi,

As far as I can work out the Top of Climb and Top of Descent points only show in the virtual radar. If correct, could I ask that they are added to the map view too please? I rarely look at the virtual radar in flight. Great for planning, but not navigating for me. I also use the iPad mini, so an option to turn off the virtual radar when flying and maximise the map would also be nice.

Many thanks,
George
