I had a similar experience in UK. I was asked by Farnborough LARS as to my position and, from SD, was just about to tell him I was x NM from some town I had never heard of and, if I recall, didn't even appear on my CAA ICAO 1:500,000 chart.
I don't know how you would chose what to display for real-time position information but I think aeronautical features or very large towns would be best for ATC recognition/understanding purposes.

You could always use the Track Waypoint function in order to provide you with a more meaningful position report relative to a navigation feature of your choosing, especially when talking to a LARS controller.

But Skydemon is there to make life (flying) easier, not more complicated!

Track Waypoint is there for a purpose. What's complicated about a long tap on a navigational feature and selecting Track Waypoint. I use it frequently when talking to a LARS controller.

I tried that suggestion (SD 3.6.2 on Samsung S3 - flying mode selected but on the ground)  but couldn't get it to work. The displayed "position report" didn't change from the default.
Also, for me, too many "finger pressing" operations required while flying the aeroplane, pressing the PTS and trying to keep a good lookout.

If Track Waypoint were meant to replace the position report then the position report feature should be taken off the program. As long as it is here, it ought to be optimized to give us the functionality it purports to provide. As it stands now. It is often times useless because it references obscure little towns. In my opinion, it should only reference aeronautical features, period.

There are not always any aeronautical features around.

If there are no aeronautical features within a radius of, say, 20 nm then use a large town. But you need to ensure that the town really IS large. As it is now, there are plenty aeronautical features around within that radius and SD still references a tiny little village. This situation has occurred to me in Germany, Austria, Hungary, Slovenia and Croatia.

Greetings, -- Chris.

In the UK we have CHIRP - Confidential Human factors Incident Reporting Programme. In the latest edition of their newsletter I happened to note this article (no mention made of any particular navigation product):

"We havepublished reports on several occasions about RTF transmissions that fell shortof the high

standardsthat we all expect. We received another example from a pilot who overheard anexchange in

which therewas fault on both sides. A controller was working hard and allowed hisfrustration to show

when apilot gave his position with reference to a small village of no aviationsignificance. The controller

was wrongto be sarcastic but the pilot was wrong to refer to a place that the controllerand other pilots on

thefrequency were unlikely to know. A rough estimate of range and bearing from abig town, airfield or

beacon isbetter than an accurate position relative to an insignificant village; if usingan electronic tablet

App checkto see if reference features are configurable. Poor RTF wastes time, fails inits purpose of

communicatingclearly and causes distractions. We all need to think how our message will bereceived

before wepress the transmit button."

I've made a slight change to favour aeronautical features over non-aeronautical features in the next version, we'll see what the effect of that is. We exclude small strips, microlight airfields etc from position reporting because ATC is often unaware of them, so in a lot of cases, towns will still end up being used.
