Hello,

I'm considering a Sky Demon subscription, and have been contemplating a device on which to use it whilst airborne.

I'm a Windows man at heart, so I've been looking at one of the more inexpensive 8" tablets that are available with Windows 10. Unfortunately they mostly only have 1GB of RAM.

So - a couple of questions, really... First off, how do you think SD would perform on such a device. Secondly, how 'touch friendly' is the Windows version likely to be on an 8" screen?

Finally, are there any future plans to build a Windows 10 'universal app' for Sky Demon?

Thanks
- Chris

Whilst SkyDemon should be fine with just 1GB of RAM, I wouldn't recommend the Windows tablet approach.

Firstly, ignoring the specifics of Skydemon ....
I've got more tablets than the local pharmacy, and I still find the windows 10 ones fiddly to use without a keyboard - when compared to iPad or Android.  Granted they will run full Windows apps, but generally I use a Windows tablet with a keyboard/mouse as a pseudo laptop - as most Windows apps aren't optimised for touch screen. Another practical issue with these budget Windows tablets is likely to be battery life.

More specifically around SkyDemon - the PC version should work - but you'll no doubt have a lot of messing around to get GPS to work - and you won't benefit from the tablet optimised layout that you get on both Android and iPad.

If price is important - you could do much worse than the Android Nexus 7 (2013 edition) - whilst only a 7 inch tablet, I find this my preference to wear as a pseudo-kneeboard. You can get non-glare matt screen covers, which are also very worthwhile - and plenty of choice of mounts (or in my case, cases to modify into a kneeboard!). It has both GPS and GLONASS, hence location is pretty quick and stable.

Hi,
Thanks for your reply. I appreciate the challenges around non-tablet software on a Windows 10 tablet. I'm a software developer specialising in Microsoft technologies, so I'm all too familiar with some of the shortcomings!
I'm willing to put up with a certain degree of pain (albeit not a ridiculous level) and (as a personal preference) I try to avoid sending money Google's way and, as I'm 'invested' in the MS ecosystem, I'm not sure I have the energy to go down the iPad route (with the inevitable iTunes / iCloud / iWhatever that would go with it!).
The ideal for me would be the announcement of a SkyDemon Windows 10 universal app which is designed for touch, but I would imagine that's not going to be on the cards for a while, if ever!?
Thanks anyway,
- Chris

No, not on the cards I'm afraid. The best tablet on which to run SkyDemon is an iPad. It's a superb experience.
