Where to keep my Nexus 7 whilst flying?

I strap my Nexus 7 to my kneeboard so a quick glance down is all I need to view the map.  However, in the last few flights SD has lost my position, claiming "waiting for location data", which in a C172 surprised me as the large windscreen rarely blocks the view of the sky.  On Friday I flew from Rochester to Panshangar with an uninterrupted track on SD, but the return flight was interrupted 4 times by loss of GPS.  I can't believe that travelling NW is better for GPS than travelling SE, so I'm assuming there is something wrong with where I keep the device in-flight.

All this is a long-winded way of me asking you fellow Nexus 7 owners where you put the device when flying?  Do you keep it on your knee, or mount it on the yoke, dash, or somewhere else?

Dave

You have too, a large wing just above.

Use an external Bluetooth GPS (50-60 €) with BT GPS for example. They work just fine with SD ...

True there is a wing either side of the cockpit, but the area directly above my knee is blue sky, so I don't know why I lose the signal.  Even more frustrating is that my tiny Galaxy S3 Mini holds the GPS signal in SD perfectly whilst stowed in the door handle recess which is directly under the wing.

Is it me, Android, or SD???

It's not SkyDemon. We just show whatever location we are passed by the operating system. Try another piece of navigation software, or just Google Maps. If you see things correctly in there, it means that the OS isn't passing location data to SkyDemon, which may be a permission issue you can resolve. If you don't, then you know where the problem is.

I had the same problem recently flying back from Le Touquet. No problem there but on way back i only received a signal 50% of the time. I presume the answer is an external GPS receiver. I have seen one advertised on Amazon

GlobalSat BT-359 Bluetooth GPS Receiver
would this be suitable? Priced at £18.95.
If not does anyone have experience with any other devices?

I have flown 1000s of hours using various skydemon devices, and can confirm that not all pick up satellite data reliably. I have recently been trying a Tesco Hudl, which is pretty useless on the knee. The problem seems to be with the hardware. Sometimes devices just seem to have a weaker receiver than others. I have also found that a crowded cabin can also weaken the signal.

I guess an external GPS dongle could help, but have not tried one yet.
