This is very good news. I may even say goodbye to my iPads! Is there an official announcement though?

Thanks very much for being so prompt. But I would have thought the SD forum would be a good FORUM to announce the good news. Why do we have FORA (Plural of Forum) then? This query is not meant for Mr Hendrik. Rather for members of the SD Team who are quite active in Flyer and other FORA! The intention is to highlight that the SD Forum does need regular updating, to prevent it from becoming a Furorum.

I am keeping an eye on a Galaxy of some sort or a Lenovo tablet. To get the latter I may need to talk to the bank manager nicely!

I got the permission from the bank manager ( it's me ) and ordered the Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 last Friday. I cannot await to let run SD on Android. Thank you very much in advance to the SD-crew! It was the right decision to create an Android version of SD!!!! Regards, Taigajoe

I have trialled the Freelander PG10 (Chinese Import available on Amazon - £130 with 3G/WiFi/GPS/2 x SIM slots/MicroSD) and happy to say latest Android release (26 March 2013) works a treat. The display is not great in sunlight (not expected at £130) so I fitted a 7" sun hood and feedback from my rear seater is that it is fine. Plan to use Galaxy Note 2 as back up to my MGL EFIS in the front. Thanks SD for the Android platform - flying has become that more enjoyable. Bob www.rv-8.co.uk

I have a wi-fi only Nexus 7. Am I going to need the 3g version to use it aloft do you think (assuking I do all my planning on the ground so pick up wx and Notams in advance)?

Don't see why you would need (or in a lot of cases, be able to get) a 3G signal when aloft. All it'll need that for is downloading maps, weather, NOTAMs etc. Do all that on the ground with it tethered to your phone. Andy

No because it already has an in-built GPS. 3G may be useful to update enroute weather etc but not essential for navigation.
As I understand it only the ipad has the problem of the wifi only version having no in-built GPS, but even then an external GPS can be used (although only a few are compatible with ipad and are quite expensive).

Thanks for this, You've just made up my mind to buy a Nexus7, thank god I didn't have to fork out 500 bucks for an I pad!
Would appreciate some pics/tips on how to mount it on a flexwing (specifically a GT-450).
Cheers

After downloading, I get a "problem parsing the package" message. Am I being too ambitious trying it on a Galaxy S?

Works well and looks good on my Galaxy S3, I've noted a fault whereby if you hide the virtual radar it crashes, plus a couple of observations via the feedabck form. Will be easier to cockpit mount than the iPad for sure.

malcolmfrost (14/03/2013) After downloading, I get a "problem parsing the package" message. Am I being too ambitious trying it on a Galaxy S?Does your device meet the minimum requirements (in particular the Android OS must be at least 3.2) - wikipedia says it never had any official release beyond 2.3. You could try Cyanogenmod, but I think you may end up in a world of pain running 4.x with only 512MB of RAM.

This good news - let's start on the bug reports ;-) The icons and text is too big for small screens, just tried it on the HTC One X (understand it may not be designed for that, though). Tried to upload a picrure, but the forum wouldn't let me.

You need to upload your photo to a site such as photobucket, then link back to it.

I just did a trouble free software upgrade which has fixed the problem. Settings About Phone Software Updates I accept no responsibility if it kills your phone but mine was very straightforward and happily did itself in ten minutes or so. Just don't mess with it whilst it's doing it And well chuffed with what I've seen so far .....

Same issue on my HTC One X as regards button layout. However, I doubt it was ever really designed to run on a device that small. I flew with SkyDemon on a 32GB Nexus 7 WiFi only version yesterday, and I have to say the display was excellent. Very readable, even in direct sunlight. Knocked my mate's iPad 1 into a cocked hat! Some minor issues with stability (mainly when manoeuvring on the ground or in the circuit) which hopefully Tim and Co can address. Glad I waited for the Android version and didn't jump onto an iPad mini, saved myself a couple of hundred quid and it looks like I may have got a better screen to boot! It's certainly perfectly usable in the cockpit.

Works fine on my galaxy S2, although map loading is a little slow. I am due to purchase the newly announced galaxy S4 and will install on that as a backup to the ipad. Will report performance then.

Looks lovely on my Nexus 7 that arrived today. This may seem like a numpty question, but I created a user waypoint on it, how do I delete it? (Edit.. solved it myself. Pull up the waypoint details and hold your finger down on it for a second or so and a 'Delete' button appears)Rob P Thanks Tim and the team - proper job!

Looks great on my wife’s Nexus 4.
I'll see if she'll swap phones tomorrow so I can air test it.
Looks like it will work really well in our RV-12.

I take it you need an external GPS with the Nexus 7, or is there a version with an internal one.

This isn't Apple, it's Android. All Nexus 7 come with a (very efficient) GPS internally. No need to go to the extra expense of a bluetooth GPS or having to buy a 3G version. Rob P

My wife’s Nexus 4 worked really well in the RV-12 today. https://dl.dropbox.com/u/58309803/Photos/IMG_1028.JPG The Nexus 4 had little screen reflection, and in that respect was better than my ipad. It was much better screen than the £40 ChineseWindows CE GPS I bought as a backup. This is returning up the Manchester Low Level Corridor. https://dl.dropbox.com/u/58309803/Photos/SkyDemon.wmv As we haven’t room to mount an ipad in our small panel, a phone version really makes sense. I’ll sell the Windows CE GPS but keep the ipad for backup and big screen planning. Now is anyone doing a deal on a Samsung Galaxy 4?? John.

Loaded the app on my Samsung Galaxy SIII mini without problem. I have not had the chance to try it in flight but it appears to work well at ground level in the car although I did have a bit of difficulty climbing to 1300ft to avoid an obstruction! One issue that I did notice was that the altitude was consistently overstated by around 150 ft - not knowing enough about these things I don't know if this is an Android issue, my phone issue or something else. Other gps apps on my phone also overstate by a similar amount and I have seen similar results on a Nexus 4 whereas on an iPad the altitude is within 20 feet or so similar to the performance of my Garmin 296.

I have SD loaded and working on my HTC One. It's fantastic. Blisteringly fast on a quad core 1.7mhz processor and very clear, and a tidy size in cockpit. A Nexus 7 will shortly replace my oversized iPad, but in the meanwhile this is a great supplementary device. Only issue so far is that the fonts are too big despite being set to the lowest level on a very high resolution screen (470 ppi)

Would it be a good idea to move this thread to the "Navigation section" of the forum ? Soon it will cease to be a "Beta discussion" any more.

I also noticed that at first on my HTC Sensation and Galaxy Tab 2 10.1. It seems to have been fixed in the latest beta (dated 20th March), as has the crashing on the Galaxy Tab 2.

Hi,
Can anyone recommend a suitable mount for a Nexus 7 that can clamp to some metal tubing (with diameter of less than a cm) and that has a short arm.
Cheers

I installed the latest version with Google Play (store). Works fine but one thing that I have send twice to the development team: When touching an airport, I no longer see crucial information like radio (communication) freqs en runway information. One of the powerfull options from Skydemon I think. When choosing an airport to visit we always checked basic info by touching that airport on the map! The only way at this moment is to make a route, including the airport to visit and then looking up the info retrieving the pilot log. So dear Skydemon team, please inplement it (back) as in the CE and Ipad version.
