This happened to me today using mini iPad. It happened several times during a 1 hr flight and twice in car on the way home. No such problem on previous flight with which was mid Dec time - I think SD software has been changed in between but I will also have added apps and other stuff to iPad in that time - it was very annoying during flight and needs a quick fix - please.

Exactly the same issues as you are all reporting. Worked great on my Ipad 1 with the odd crash until the last update at the end of December.

Due to weather not been able to fly until today when it was worse than useless. Kept crashing after a few minutes when trying to fly a route.

Needs to be sorted or the old version put back on Itunes. Alternatively of course a new patch needs to be released to sort ASAP.

Whatever not able to use it for anything other than ground route planning at this stage.

Regards

Biggles,

Thanks for the link, I'll try these tips.

I operate an iPad1 (64 GB, IOS 5.1.1, Wifi & 3G), about 40 GB free storage.

I also assume the little RAM in the first iPads are responsible for the crashes.

I seem to agree with EFRenkin's opinion above. Is it possible to note at least the total memory in the devices that continue to crash?

Looking at the error logs which indicate a LOW MEMORY EVENT took place while running SD, it would certainly look as if SD cannot acquire enough memory pages and is then "jettisoned" SD from the active processes.

Just hope they provide it with a parachute!!!!!!

Perhaps dumping/closing/deactivating everything that isn't needed might be a way of improving the stability if the problem is with memory pages. That may mean stopping some processes in the SETTINGS in order to ensure they don't automatically get invoked.

I have been using an iPad 2 for business for a while and thought I would invest in SD to futher exploit the brilliance of the iPad. I have 'played' extensively with the iPad in my house and even taken it for a couple of drives to test it out. I am using it with the Garmon Glo and was initially impressed with the functionality.

Due to work and weather constraints, I was only able to test the SD airborn last Sunday from Cambridge for the first time and was looking forward to seeing it in operation in 3D not 2D!

However my excitement tured to dismay, as between Cambridge and Duxford, I had to re-boot SD four times which was literally every 2 minutes. I never managed a 'Breadcrumb' for more than 2 miles and my log gave me numerous Unknown to Unknown flights!

I can see from this forum than I am not alone with the problem. I have closed all programms down, re-installed SD and upgraded to SD2.5. My iPad is running 6.0.1.

I suppose all I am try to establish is if the problem relates to my iPad or SD and either way, are Apple or SD doing anything to resolve the bug?

Any ideas would be welcome. I even invested in the kneepad iPad holder at £35.00 for a piece of plastic.....

Perhaps those effected by this issue might like to check the iPad diagnostics report.

This can be found in

SETTINGS, GENERAL, ABOUT, DIAGNOSTICS & USAGE, DIAGNOSTICS & USAGE DATA

There should be a report about LOW MEMORY or other event. You will have to look through this until you find something like

SkyDemon <9d9559372bd63e9eb434eb7fef1b42c0>    9426 (jettisoned)

Then you'll have some idea of the reason SD got thrown out.........perhaps!!!!!!!!!

Happy hunting

Could we have some input from the SD Team to at least turn every one in the right direction? Or are we going in the right direction anyway?

According to TEARDOWN (http://ipadinsight.com/ipad-mini/teardown-confirms-ipad-mini-has-512mb-of-ram/) the iPad MINI (and iPad 2) have the A5 dual core processor and only 512K available RAM which I believe means that each processor has access to 256K RAM which is the same as the iPad 1 (1 CORE PROCESSOR & 256K RAM).

If the issue is with available RAM (and I suspect that it is whether through allocation of leakage), then iPad 1, 2 & MINI users ----- problem is the same irrespective of which of the 3 devices you're using.

HELP?

The iPad MINI I'm trialling is the WiFi + 3G, which has the onboard GPS, running only 5 apps. To date I haven't had a single failure and am waiting to see what happens. The error log file is currently empty and I will let you know what transpires.

I've just had a response from SD support. A new version that fixes this seemingly esoteric bug has been submitted to Apple for approval and should appear in 7-10 days once approved. Smile
