Could this be made available for iPad users so that I can have them available in case of diversions and to minimize 3G charges for European touring?

Thanks

Sorry, this is never going to happen. Are you aware that "all plates" come to around 20gb? If we made such an option available to our many thousands of subscribers, our servers simply couldn't cope with the (very expensive) bandwidth demand that would result.

The closest we may get to this is an option to download all plates currently being offered in the plates window.

Would it be possible to show some kind of browsing window (like a folder structure) with something like continent and/or country, and then airfields in each with a list selection?

The user could then select a range of airfields he/she is interested in, and ideally (without knowing your implementation) this would simply be a download request direct to EAD, bypassing your servers?

Anything we do must come directly from our servers. We have no right to place EAD servers under the massive demand from our users, and we offer (or are in the process of preparing to offer) a few sources of plates other than EAD.

Don't worry, we'll find a solution that everyone is happy with. We're just letting things settle down first so we can make sure we make the right choice.

Hi Tim,

thanks for replying to this.

Maybe all plates within 20NM of the planned route coul be made available for download? I have had a number of weather diversions somewhere in Europe where it would've been really nice to have the plates.

I would happily pay an extra few pounds a year to enable you to get higher bandwidth on your servers Wink

Regards

Reading this post again Tim I would have to disagree with you about the EAD servers. Surely the EAD website and servers is designed to cope with hundreds if not thousands of simultaneous users. One of its primary services is to provide online access for the aviation community across the whole of EASA land, including access to and downloading of plates?

Yes absolutely, I'm sure they are meatier than ours. But we have no right (or ability) to make the SkyDemon app download data straight from EAD. EAD are simply one of the many plate providers that are piped into our own document management system, and that we then serve up ourselves. Our license entitles us to download those plates and redistribute them ourselves.

I believe others have created software to bulk download the entire EAD site (which is against their terms and conditions).
