Time for Humble pie! As an anti-Apple anorak, I had been holding out in the hope that SD would appear for Android. No immediate prospect was the message I got from Tim at the Flying Show so i decided to dig deep for an iPad mini (£369 for 16g vers with GPS). I have NOT been disappointed. The iPad version of SD is yet another great step forward which has to be tried to be appreciated. Even if the iPad had no other purpose it would be worth buying just for SD. On the other hand, if I didn't want it for SD I probably couldn't justify it in comparison to an Android tablet!

The size of the "mini" makes it a perfect knee pad in a small cockpit and that leads me to a suggestion for 2 extra taps down the right hand side (as per metar and taf tabs): the first is to provide rapid access to the scratch pad so that its easy to flip between it and the map, the second is to provide a Docs tap which would take you to a list of user loaded adobe type docs and so provide easy access to bespoke information such as check lists. ......... But of course you have to be an iPad SD user to appreciate these suggestions! What do others think?

There comes a time when you just have to swallow your pride and accept stuff .... This was definitely one of those and it has ended in a smile!

Can appreciate your comments about going with Apple with the mini ipad.......but , and it is a very big But ....

Apple Mini ipad 32 GB with 3G............... £ 449

Google Nexus 7 32 GB with 3G................£239

That price differential is not trivial !...... thats about 6 hours flying for me !

The 16GB 3G iPad Mini is £369. Unless you plan on filling it with videos, you won't get any benefit from the 32GB version.

The long and short of it is... if you want to run SD now in the cockpit on a 7" tablet, you've got no choice anyway!

Still a heck of a price difference just for a designer label item just to run SD (excellent though SD is!)

I despise apple products and all the hype and lock-in that it entails, as you may already be able to tell.

I just want an (ice cream sandwich or later) Android device to run SD on - and probably very little else. I like the idea that an Android device is cheap and cheerful enough to be used for a single application - i.e. it can just live in my flight bag.
I also like the idea that it wouldn't need the expense and hassle of a 3G connection - just GPS and WiFi built in!
Apple's continued insistence that GPS and 3G have to go together in the ipAd is just silly when more and more phones provide your wireless hotspot when you need it, with only one cellphone account required.

I think despising something is a bit strong... A bit of perspective needed?!

Anyway, the price premium is £130 - an amount you will easily recover in future resale value. For that £130 extra you're getting access to a stable mature platform with a whole ecosystem of quality applications - especially aviation related stuff.

I've been dragged screaming to the Apple altar through my kids giving me an iPad3 for Christmas. It's really not what I want. However, I'm considering changing it to the iPad mini just to run SD (and other flying apps such as Pooleys) as I don't think SD will ever get to Android - leaves an opening for others maybe. I have 2 Google Nexus 7s - one for upstairs, one for downstairs. They are wonderful.

One of the things that puts me off Apple is the extra software you must load on to your PC - iTunes. I'm forever finding amusement when my kids curse it. So, my question is, must I use iTunes in order to run SD?

And if I don't what are the restrictions? Any advice would be much appreciated as decisions must be made in John Lewis tomorrow (Sunday).

I am a regular user of Skydemon lite and an Android tablet. Have seen Skydemon for iPad and would love to see it extended to my chosen platform. Recent news is that Android useage surpasses iPad. When can we expect Skydemon for android?

Don't know about that.....Would rather buy at a realistic price and keep it !.......I usually keep stuff till the technology is well out of date ....heck , I'm still using a Garmin Pilot III ( think it hasn't been bettered as a small stand alone aviation GPS )

idea of getting a 32GB tablet is not to run out storage when away from home, transferring photos from camera and having a few TV programmes from BBCiplayer to view. Internet and e-mail on the road with a weight saving over the samsung netbook.

Yes please! I have a large-screen Android phone (HTC OneX) and would love to be able to use SkyDemon on it.
Many thanks,
Andy
