A Great job in creating a version for the iPad, by listening to your customers and it looks good. Although ipad is a little large for a small cockpit.
I have a 7" Andriod tablet which is a good size in the cockpit. Not withstanding the development work required, lets have a poll of Skydemon users that have an Android Tablet, who would benefit the use of a great application.
Thanks

Yeeeees please,
I got a PC subscription and it is excellent
7" screen is perfect for most cockpits. I will wait 2-3 years (probably longer) for the Android version instead of buying the iPad. Android version will open lots of possibilitities to choose hardware that fits your needs.

I use the free web based version at the moment but would purchase the whole package if it was available on Android as I am certainly not an Apple fan. I think that the Android market is a fairly large chunk of new business if it was available.

I may be in the market for a tablet within the next year or so. I dislike Apple's policy of deliberately restricting the usability of their products so won't be buying an ipad I like the idea of a windows tablet (once win8 comes out anyway), but android may also be an option. Would be nice to have the choice of running SD on any tablet of my choice....

Can I add my support to Android based products. Having got the latest iPad (for my 5 years old budding pilot) I do not think that I will be repeating the same mistake again. Apple's products are restrictive and totally not user friendly.

Wouldn't touch an ipad and have no wish to be forced into getting one. I have a windows tablet which is good, has a lovely non reflective screen, but is pretty rubbish as a tablet computer without a keyboard and a tad on the large side I would get an android - htc flyer is appropriately named ............

As newer ( 7 inch ? ) tablets are produced they are getting better brightness displays, but the OS is becoming most likely to be Andriod, win ce is unlikely to be used ? Can we have an Android version of SD so as to get brighter displays ? Hope so !

Navbox Pro have released an Android version .... I'm very tempted, but will wait a few more months in the hope SkyDemon release one.
I hate Apple stuff .... I would be buying an Ipad just to run SkyDemon ... woulds rather use another Nav program rather than buy Apple ...

Can we have an Android version of SD so as to get brighter displays ? Hope so !I agree with this post. I am using SD on my 10" Netbook and 10" Win7 Tablet for planning and during flight. I love using SD that is a fact. But the 10" devices (also Ipad) are to big and not convenient for using in flight. Also the UI for planning mode is not optimized for using on a Tablet. For the Win-Tablet in planning mode I miss the UI of the Ipad version. But what I mostly miss on Windows devices is a bright 7-8" display with a good resolution. Nearly every day coming new Android devices on the market with good hardware. I found several devices which would work perfectly in cockpit. Thats why I vote for Android. Common Tim its a big market! Do it and you will get more customers.

A little complement: An alternate for the beginning would be to implement only the GPS Nav mode (like on the WinCE devices) to the Android OS first. May be it is not so expensive in coding like the planing mode. It would be a nice step and very helpful....

I don't like to bang and rant but I have been using Linux on the pc for years and had problems with Sky Demon when it first came out. Now that the rest of the world is using the same operating system on phones and tablets (52.2% in the US compared to 33.4% for Apple), concentrating on minor operating systems like Windows is surely not the way to enhance what is a brilliant product.
Bring out an Android app soon ...........Please!

Very much a yes please.
In fact I have joined these forums just to make my interest known as I own a Xoom and would strongly be interested to purchase SD for VFR planning and Nav to use on it.. Although I have looked at the SD program before and have no problem with the cost I did not want to use a laptop in a light aircraft. Too many issues such as size, battery life etc etc.
Similar to some other replies I refuse to use Apple products as I have seen too many problems with the ones that my son owns.

Having researched this a bit more I'm finding it difficult to find windows tablets that fit the bill, especially at a reasonable price. Maybe this will change in the not too distant future but they just don't seem to be there yet. There seem to be a lot more Android tablets suitably equipped to run SD and at sensible prices too. Having owned an iphone and been utterly frustrated at what it wouldn't do (due to Apple's restrictive software regime) I have no intention of going down the Apple route again. I think a slightly smaller screen would be better too as a 10" is really too big to mount in the cockpit. Something around 7" would be a good size - and there are several Android tablets around this size. For now I'll continue running SD on my 5" Chinese GPS...... So that's a big "YES PLEASE" from me for an Android version
Edit: Yes I'd like Android navigation first, but Android flight planning would be useful too.

I have sky demon installed on a 5" Chinese device which I have problems with ( faulty switch), as support from China is none existent, I would like to get a unit with a 7" screen from a uk supplier who can provide backup. I have been looking at 7" tablets ( Android) with gps & a card slot . However; Being a bit computer illiterate & looking at these posts it seems to me that it will not work, is this because it has to have windows CE. Any suggestion as to what make I should be looking at would be appreciated.

outmyway (05/07/2012) The shortly to be announced 7-8" Ipad mini might be the answer to all our dreams! Not mine lol I think it would take a complete reversal of Apple's practice of deliberately restricting both their hardware and software for me to consider buying one of their products again. Having said that the Nexus 7 is also lacking in one or two areas, e.g. no microSD card slot. It still looks pretty good for the price though But there are plenty of other Android products available right now with displays anywhere from 4" to 9" (i.e. smaller than ipad), all we need is SD

Hi
I've used Skydemon since the early betas starting from WM5.0 and luv to stay with it. Currently I am considering a 7 inch tablet which will most likely be Android. There are so many around. Costs are low and having Skydemon for Android would open up another market.
Tim what are your thoughts on that whole matter? I know IPAD may release a 7 inch version but again those are only rumors and using the Apple Store surely must cost more money compared to what it would costs you using Android? Let us know please.

Just got my Nexus 7 Tablet. Would really like to have SD it on a 7" tablet. Previously ran SD on HP 4700 and Ipaq 314,which were ok but battery life was the limiting factor for use. (even with spare batteries and various Gorillas etc). I think the Nexus should be good for at least 5+ hours.

Being an Android fan I too was waiting to see if an Android version would appear or even a hint from the SD team that an Android version was being thought about. Unfortunately the silence was deafening so last week I bit the bullet and invested in an iPad 3. Overall I am very pleased with the iPad something I thought that I would never see myself writing! I'm not too happy with the latest SD/iPad update debacle though! All ready for my first flight flight to play with SD and the iPad and it doesn't work!

I´m also waiting for a android SD-app. I flew this season from Germany to scandinavia with SD-software and hardware. The software is excellent, from the best but the hardware.... My backup system was oziexplorer on a Dell Streak 5 android. The Dell Streak 5 is a very fast 5´mobile phone with the best display I ever used in a airplane and glider. It´s another world. Also in clear sun the display is phantastic. I´m also a glider pilot, and in the german glider-scene, the Dell streak 5 is the best choice in the sunny cockpits. Hoping that the SD-android software will come soon. Then I will extend my SD-license and use it on my Dell streak 5. Greetings from Germany Günter

The display on my recently aquired Samsung Galaxy Note 2 Phone is excellent. Let me add my voice to the clamour for SkyDemon on Android! I don't really want to do the "Apple thing". Windows and Android have opened computing to the masses - good for them A tablet plus a bluetooth GPS receiver sounds the way to go!

jc (18/12/2012) Oh dear you've gone to the dark side!
Never mind, when the SD Android comes out you can sell your iPad I suppose. Now the proud owner of a Galaxy Tab 2 10.1. Well it's a Christmas pressie for the whole family. Great tablet though, and available for as little as £170 at the moment with the Samsung cashback. I'd still like a tablet for my own personal use (read: one that the kids can't mess around with) and am looking at Windows 8 devices, specifically the Lenovo ThinkPad Tablet 2. For Skydemon use though, that's still a 10" tablet and that's big for the cockpit (it's still expensive too!). Can't help coming back to the earlier conclusion that 7" devices such as the Nexus 7 or Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 would be great cost effective units for SD!

I used to use AirNavPro before a friend talked me into SD. Still have ANP on my iPad but use it only rarely. When I swapped over to SD it was the time when AirNavPro started developing the Android version. Since then the frequency of updates has been lowered 3-4 times for iOS.
SD for iOS runs perfectly!
My 2 (€)cents, as I'm German :-)

Yes but the lowest cost ipad mini capable of running SD as a stand alone unit costs £400+, while suitable Android devices are already available for around £150, maybe less (I'm considering 7" devices by the way, although as I've found out you can have a 10" Galaxy Tab 2 for £170 at the moment). I'd rather spend the extra cash on more flying Add to that Apple's restrictive regime that many of us hate In addition my experience of i-devices is that far from what Apple fans tell us, they don't always "just work", but experience a similar degree of issues to any other similar devices.
I'm sure SD are capable of continuing their excellent frequency of updates and customer service in general, even when supporting Android in addition to ipad/Windows/CE. A friend who is a software developer told me Android was a pain to develop apps for in comparison to IOS. He's an Apple fanboi though

Time for Humble pie! As an anti-Apple anorak, I had been holding out in the hope that SD would appear for Android. No immediate prospect was the message I got from Tim at the Flying Show so i decided to dig deep for an iPad mini (£369 for 16g vers with GPS). I have NOT been disappointed. The iPad version of SD is yet another great step forward which has to be tried to be appreciated. Even if the iPad had no other purpose it would be worth buying just for SD. On the other hand, if I didn't want it for SD I probably couldn't justify it in comparison to an Android tablet!
The size of the "mini" makes it a perfect knee pad in a small cockpit and that leads me to a suggestion for 2 extra taps down the right hand side (as per metar and taf tabs): the first is to provide rapid access to the scratch pad so that its easy to flip between it and the map, the second is to provide a Docs tap which would take you to a list of user loaded adobe type docs and so provide easy access to bespoke information such as check lists. ......... But of course you have to be an iPad SD user to appreciate these suggestions! What do others think?
There comes a time when you just have to swallow your pride and accept stuff .... This was definitely one of those and it has ended in a smile!

The 16GB 3G iPad Mini is £369. Unless you plan on filling it with videos, you won't get any benefit from the 32GB version. The long and short of it is... if you want to run SD now in the cockpit on a 7" tablet, you've got no choice anyway!

stevelup (26/12/2012) The 16GB 3G iPad Mini is £369. Unless you plan on filling it with videos, you won't get any benefit from the 32GB version.Still a heck of a price difference just for a designer label item just to run SD (excellent though SD is!) I despise apple products and all the hype and lock-in that it entails, as you may already be able to tell. I just want an (ice cream sandwich or later) Android device to run SD on - and probably very little else. I like the idea that an Android device is cheap and cheerful enough to be used for a single application - i.e. it can just live in my flight bag. I also like the idea that it wouldn't need the expense and hassle of a 3G connection - just GPS and WiFi built in! Apple's continued insistence that GPS and 3G have to go together in the ipAd is just silly when more and more phones provide your wireless hotspot when you need it, with only one cellphone account required.

I despise apple products I think despising something is a bit strong... A bit of perspective needed?! Anyway, the price premium is £130 - an amount you will easily recover in future resale value. For that £130 extra you're getting access to a stable mature platform with a whole ecosystem of quality applications - especially aviation related stuff.

I've been dragged screaming to the Apple altar through my kids giving me an iPad3 for Christmas. It's really not what I want. However, I'm considering changing it to the iPad mini just to run SD (and other flying apps such as Pooleys) as I don't think SD will ever get to Android - leaves an opening for others maybe. I have 2 Google Nexus 7s - one for upstairs, one for downstairs. They are wonderful. One of the things that puts me off Apple is the extra software you must load on to your PC - iTunes. I'm forever finding amusement when my kids curse it. So, my question is, must I use iTunes in order to run SD? And if I don't what are the restrictions? Any advice would be much appreciated as decisions must be made in John Lewis tomorrow (Sunday).

I am a regular user of Skydemon lite and an Android tablet. Have seen Skydemon for iPad and would love to see it extended to my chosen platform. Recent news is that Android useage surpasses iPad. When can we expect Skydemon for android?

Don't know about that.....Would rather buy at a realistic price and keep it !.......I usually keep stuff till the technology is well out of date ....heck , I'm still using a Garmin Pilot III ( think it hasn't been bettered as a small stand alone aviation GPS )
idea of getting a 32GB tablet is not to run out storage when away from home, transferring photos from camera and having a few TV programmes from BBCiplayer to view. Internet and e-mail on the road with a weight saving over the samsung netbook.

Can I add another "yes please" to the requests for an android version?
Just as background I started out programming Apple computers in 1981 (the Apple II for those old enough to remember - fantastic machine) and now write code for both Apple and Android (and Windows).
Each has its advantages. Apple kit looks and feels lovely and, mostly but not always, works well (anyone mention mapping?). But its also expensive, highly restrictive and, these days, poorer spec than the alternatives (eg the latest iPhone is 2 years behind the competition). But I also know you'll never persuade an Applehead of any of those downsides. Apple is religion!
Android is most of what Apple isn't - flexible, open, fast, cheap, but can be quirky, unpredictable to code for and is at times infinitely annoying. If you want a simple life then Apple is probably for you. If you want to make your own choices when it comes to hardware/software then Android is for you.
For me, I'd have an Android tablet over the iPad because I am mean and object to paying double a product's value. But that is me. Without a doubt more people will choose Android if the best aviation software - SkyDemon - is available for it. What I couldn't say is whether more people would buy a tablet for flying or whether the Android sales would just cannibalise the Apple sales.
So here is hoping for SD in Android version. Meantime I'm using a Galaxy Note running an inferior, competitors product.

Another nod for an Android version of SkyDemon. When a mobile OS has roughly 80% market share how can you ignore it!?!

I bought an iPad a year ago reluctantly and specifically to use Sky Demon. I love SD and continue to hate the iPad and Apple for a very long list of reasons. I will have to continue to put up with the iPad until there is an Android version because I can't live without SD, but the moment I have a choice the iPad is going to the kids where it belongs and I'll be buying a 7 inch Android tablet.

Hi,
I too am waiting for the Android version, nice to see that I'm not alone.
It looks like a good effort has been put in the development by the SD team, well done.

I do hope that the SD team wake up and launch the Android version. As I understand it a very close competitor is developing an Android version. It would be a great pity if Tim and his team miss out because of this.
A basic business rule is that if enough punters ask for something then you must oblige- 11 pages of Android requests is serious number.

Tim,
A lot of folk are waiting for some guidance on an Android release - and I for one am waiting as this will decide if I buy an iPad mini or a cheaper and more flexible android device - the money I would save would easily cover the cost of my next SD annual subscription for eaxample!
It's about time some news was shared with your subscibers about the availability - or not - of an Android SD. If the answer is no - then at least we have some clear guidance.
Hugh

Another vote for Android from me. I trialled SD on a friend's standard iPad (no 3G sim). On the ground in my office the system was great. In the air I was unable to get a GPS lock.
I have now successfully installed CyanogenMod 10 on my HP TouchPad. The GPS in the TouchPad seems not to be constrained by the same problems experienced with the non-3G iPads so I'm very keen to get SD installed. Then I just need the airstrip to dry out!!!

Yes, I agrees with Hugh G-OIBM.
I have used SD (PC version) for one year now and think it is brilliant. I am an owner of two Android tabs (10.1" and 7") and I thinkSD users that are waiting for SD Android version need some idea about the future plans. The total silence is not good.I know pilots in Norway that have been waiting a very long period for SD-Android but have give it up for Air Nav Pro.
Today Android offer a huge number of different units: small, large, expensive, cheap and ruggedized that can be used in temperature below zero, etc, etc,This will make SD even more attractive. My plan is to wait one more year before I follow my friends decisions. That is because I really like SD. Good support and reliable software. But I will never by an iPad. I have have too many apps that you cannot find on App Store. I like open systems. I will never be pushed towards any proprietary operating system.
So SD team, please let your fans know what your future plans are. If I just know I am willing to wait another 2-3 years. Probably more.I am also willing to pay in advanced for an Android Version.
The number of replies and views of this thread is really speaking for it self.

where is my Android app? I'm seriously thinking of getting Air Nav Pro for Android... Seriously though, as it its now there's pretty much a void in the g market, so if that was to be filled by a quality app such a SD I'm pretty sure you would rack up millions... it's business 101. I'll be waiting then...

Android Version please! There are no suitable convertible laptops running windows that have GPS chips, and some of us HATE all things Iphone / Ipad / Apple... Therefore Android please! Note: The Android operating system has the largest market share of any operating system for mobile phones. Screens are bigger, and perfect to fit in confined cockpits!! S44uny (16/02/2013)he Android operating system has the largest market share of any operating system for mobile phones. The 53.6% figures in the linked article for Android cover thousands of different variants ranging from cheap $30 disposable phones up to premium products. No matter which way you choose to try and interpret the statistics, the Apple platform is still -massively- more prevalent amongst smartphone users who actually use the 'smart' bits of their devices. The cheap devices - many of which don't even have a touchscreen - are skewing the Android figures. A much better indicator is web traffic coming from mobile devices, and the most recent results for this (January 2013) show 60.56% coming from iOS and just 24.51% from the myriad Android variants.

Love using the planning option on the iPad but an Android version on my phone would put the nav option in the small cockpit. Any chance of a "not before" time frame??

I know it is like religion - you have to be careful - but I dare say: SkyDemon running on an iPad mini is a fantastic constellation. Small enough to fit in any cockpit. Big enough to utilize all capabilities of the software and very easy to use. Instead of using resources developing the software to run on Android it would be better to use the effort to make a very good package even better. E-gun

You have to realise that there are lots of people who just don't like Apple. They prefer the openness of Android. Hence the large number of requests to the SD Team for an Android version. The Nexus 7 I have bought in anticipation of Android SD performs perfectly. As soon as the Android version is available my iPad will be on Ebay.

True, but it's about more than just a dislike of Apple. An android version opens up the possibility of using SD on many other devices costing as little as £150. To get even an ipad mini with in-built GPS you need to buy the wifi+3G version, so close to £450 then Of course the wifi only ipad can be used albeit with an external GPS, but then care is needed to select one that Apple "allow" to use with the ipad...... and they aren't the ones costing £20 on ebay either...... Also remember there are people out there (myself included) who already own one or more suitable Android devices and don't fancy shelling out £450 for an ipad that (excluding SD) just does pretty much the same thing! I don't see why SD can't be developed/improved on both platforms. Can't wait to try out the Android version on my HTC Sensation and Galaxy Tab2 10.1.

You have hit the nail on the head with your Apple 'allow' comment. If I buy a product I don't want the maker telling me how I can use it.
