I use Skydemon on a cheap Chinese 7" GPS in a Jodel - a lot of canopy and a lot of light. What I did was to put two velcro tabs on the gps top corners. These tabs match up to two velcro tabs on the underside of rectangular 1lt ice cream tub (Kelly's Cornish Clotted Ice Cream - sure other brands will work just as well Smile) which I've cut out to match the the screen size.

It works pretty well and the shield is quickly removable in flight.

I've also seen suggestions about removing the thin plastic sheet from the screen - not yet tried that but it would be quick to do

A few pointers:

  1. Yes you can buy hoods for these for a few bucks off the web. They work to some extent.
  2. Get a brighter device - preferably capacitive (not resistive), transflective and bright.
  3. Navigon 8410 fits this and has a screen brightness of 400NITS (ipad is 350). But this is still not truly sunlight readable. Also it costs about £250 vs £50-70 re chinese cheapo units.
  4. See elsewhere re a 5" unit with 900 NIT screen for same price as Navigon - so should be sunlight readable. But I have not seen it in the flesh and seeing is believing (excuse the pun also!)

Hope this helps.

David

Hi Folks, I'm new to the forum and used my Skydemon GPS for the first time in my Gyrocopter today.  I found it very difficult to read in bright sunlight and was wondering if anyone else had this problem and how they have overcome it.  My gyro is an open cockpit but I was wondering if some sort of shroud over the top and sides would ensure that I could read it. Has anyone got any bright (excuse the pun) ideas?

Thanks

Martin
