Why not add custom keyboard to SD?

I have just bought SkyDemon and a Chinese GPS and loaded SkyDemon onto it. Now all looks well, except that the Windows keyboard that I have to use to type with is very small and difficult to use (I have a 5" 800x480 unit). Having been browsing through these forums for some weeks now I see that I'm not the only person that's commented on the keyboard, and there has also been at least one thread where someone couldn't get the keyboard to appear at all.

I then thought, wouldn't it be easier if SkyDemon had its own large or even full screen keyboard built in, like the ones that pretty much every car sat nav uses, instead of relying on the small Windows keyboards. It would make it much easier to use in flight, and solve more of the compatibility issues that people come across.

What do you think about this? It could even be made optional through the settings if some people would prefer to stick with their own one.

I think it's a great idea. Would you like to write one for us?

On a serious note, the only reason SkyDemon doesn't have its own keyboard is that it requires us to devote our software development resources towards writing one, which has not yet been necessary. If and when we release our own device where the stock keyboard is inadequate, we will make that investment.

The problem isn't quite as simple as just making the keyboard bigger.

The issue is that on those screens where the keyboard is needed, a bigger keyboard simply obscures too much of the display and you're back to square one. The SkyDemon application doesn't know where the keyboard is, and the keyboard doesn't know where the fields are that you are trying to edit.

I've got an 800x480 device which I use in a landscape orientation. I'm working on a keyboard for it which is 720x240 in size and will automatically align to the bottom left hand corner of the display as I think this is the best compromise for working with SD for the time being.

I'll share it when it is complete.

stevelup, I'd be very grateful if you did share that keyboard when you finish it. I find the Windows keyboard is the only thing preventing SD from looking like a finished product now when running on my device.

I'll second that request. Happy to test the keyboard out too, as it's the only downside of running SD on CE that I've found!
