Great that France GAFOR is now up and running - thanks SD!
As someone who's now used GAFOR in Austria, Germany and Slovenia, however, I'm still a little unclear about the GAFOR weather criteria used in SD. In each country, the colours used actually denote slightly - but significantly - different weather minima. There appears to be no consistency across the board. Some countries omit certain colours altogether.
My question therefore is this: does SD simply follow the specific weather criteria used by the met office for each individual country in its GAFOR presentation, or does it use its own criteria, consistent and universal across all countries where GAFOR is shown on SD?
The situation is not made any clearer by the absence of any legend anywhere on SD - at least as far as I can see - delineating what each colour represents. 'Marginal VFR', for instance, can mean different things in different countries.
Any advice?

Hi,
GAFOR seems to be not standardized, making it quite complicated for SD.
Pls. refer to

What do you think are the differences in the weather criteria for different countries' GAFOR?

Hi Tim,
For starters, see below:
Difficult and Marginal are significantly different between the two sets.
Plus there is no C (Clear) for Austria/Switzerland.
Especially (but nit exclusively) when you're flying VFR in the Alps (as I have) it really pays to know what minima different categories refer to. At present, I cannot tell from SD's version, not least because there is no legend identifying the minima applied for each colour category used.
Austria/Switzerland:
O: VIS ≥ 8 km and ceiling ≥ 2000 ft
D: VIS ≥ 5 km and ceiling ≥ 1500 ft
M (marginal): VIS ≥ 2 km and ceiling ≥ 1000 ft
X: Closed
Croatia/France/Germany/Slovenia:
C: VIS ≥ 10 km and ceiling ≥ 5000 ft (Only used by Germany)
O: VIS ≥ 8 km and ceiling ≥ 2000 ft
D: VIS ≥ 5 km and ceiling ≥ 1000 ft (3 km VIS in Italy)
M: VIS ≥ 1.5 km and ceiling ≥ 500 ft
X: Closed

GAFOR are created by the countries themselves, not by us. If we say a route or area is open, it's because the country has forecast it to be open. The "clear" state was invented by Germany and is only used by Germany.
I will ask my colleague to review the GAFOR section of the documentation to ensure we mention that different countries can use different minima in their calculations.

Hi Tim
Better if possible would be to have at least a link to the graphical GAFOR legend for each country so that we know what the criteria for a particular condition are - or even find a place on SD for this? One doesn't often refer to the documentation (if that means the SD manual - but perhaps I've misunderstood?) when planning a flight on the day. All you need practically is a quick look at the graphic which identifies what colour states mean what for the country concerned.

You could create a pdf of the charts yourself for the countries of interest to you, and copy it into ‘User Documents’.
