Dear SkyDemon
Do you know if the latest release (3.10.4) is compatible with iOS 12 please?
Many thanks

I’ve been running the latest version on IOS 12 over the last 2 days. It seems smooth on iPhone 7, but my month old iPad mini 4 which I use in the cockpit seems to be experiencing lag whenever I move around the map, edit routes or open/close menus to the point it’s almost unusable (planning as well as flying modes). It was much smoother before either update, I haven’t managed to narrow down which has caused it.
Note, it seems to hang for short amount of time whenever the virtual radar is updating.

I have noticed similar lag issues while navigating after updating to iOS 12 on my iPad mini. It also seems to chew its way through the battery since the update. If you haven't done so already, I suggest delaying the iOS 12 update.

I have noticed that SkyDemon becomes very laggy (to adjust anything on the touch screen) after an hour of flight or so - the only way to get back to normal is to stop the program completely and start again.
I have a 10.7" iPad Pro with Pilotaware and LTE running, that has been running the complete set of IOS beta releases and now the GM version. I do not believe this behavior is release related but cannot remember if I had it with IOS 11(!) It has been there for multiple SkyDemon releases.
Sorry I cannot narrow it down further.

I also experienced bad lag after ios12 update on iPad mini4. Never had the problem before. Quit & relaunched in flight to fix. Not great.

Also had the same experience lag being the best way to describe the unresponsive panning and key presses within the SkyDemon app. Had three flights using PilotAware as the GPS input, if that helps. Using iOS 12 on an iPad Air 2. Latest app version 3.10.4.132

For info, I received an e-mail a few days ago from Airbox (I use it for testing) advising Runway HD users using iOS devices not to update them to iOS12 as it apparently causes a black space to appear between the Runway HD charts. So not just an SD issue.

iOS 12 is too new for us to have a full picture of exactly what issues might exist with it. New major versions of operating systems to tend to come with minor issues at first. We know SkyDemon works on iOS 12, but haven't yet managed to reproduce the lagging problem that some users are reporting on some devices.

On saturday I had two flights of each about 2 hrs crossing the alps.
I experienced the same lagging problem as described before. The planning mode works smoothly. In flight touching almost anything tends to react with seconds (plural) time. On top the GPS position was laggy too (is this the right expression? sorry I'm German...) I had to reboot my iPad several times.
Of course I contacted customer support. But only today.
I will change back to iOS 11 until SkyDemon finds first the problem and then create an update as a solution.
iPad Mini 4, iOS 12 SkyDemon 13.10.3 on saturday

I think it likely that Apple will solve this problem, rather than app vendors, but we will see. So far we have updated two of our company iPads to iOS 12 and sadly we cannot recreate the lag problem that a few users are seeing, so it is hard for us to imagine what could be wrong.

Hi Everyone, I experienced a similar issue yesterday evening.
My setup is: iPad Mini 4 Cellular (data sim enabled) No 3rd party GPS or Traffic Decives are connected. IOS 12 SkyDemon 3.10.4.132
This is the second time I have flown with SkyDemon running on my iPad since upgrading to IOS12 (last 2 flights were 2 hours with no issues).
Yesterday evening, about 30 minutes into the flight I noticed the aircraft DI and SkyDemon DI were out, upon intial interaction with the SkyDemon app, everything was unresponsive and very laggy, even the map would not move and when it did all of the map tiles disappeared. I force closed the app and relaunched, clicked continue flight and after about 10 seconds the map tiles reappeared and the app appeared to function as per normal.
I Have been using this app on this iPad for the last year or so and this is the first time I have experienced this issue, everything was flawless until I my second flight after upgrading to IOS 12.
PS - I did a full iPad reset and clean install of IOS 12 and my apps, rather than the upgrade. The only difference in my setup between this flight and the first flight running IOS12 was that on the second flight I paired my Bose A20 to my iPad via Bluetooth so I could get the SkyDemon audio alerts via my headset.
I will force close all apps and reboot my iPad prior to my next flight this weekend and see if this helps.
Hope it’s fixed soon.
Kind Regards
Dan

I’m gonna revert back to my old iPad mini 2, which is still running iOS 11.4.1 and SD 3.10.1 and running much smoother the my iPad mini 4 on iOS 12 (was unable to to restore 11.4.1 on my mini 4). I dare not update the mini 2 now.
What I’m noticing on latest version iOS 12 / SD 3.10.4 (mini 4), is performance reduces with usage over time (memory leak?).
On the mini 4, I can recreate it every time, by first killing the app, and then creating a route with one or two waypoints. I then go to Route - Start Again in the menu and then create the same route again. And then repeat over and over, create a route and start over. Each time, lag will increase. And this is just planning mode.
Theres no lag on iOS 11.4.1 / SD 3.10.1.
(Note, both devices are 4G capable, and I'm not running any 3rd party hardware).

I had the same problems today when flying with my iPad Mini 4 upgraded to iOS12. The planning mode was working fine and i didn‘t see any problems while taxiing. The lagging started to appear when i was flying at altitude 2.000 AGL (and above), where the cell tower receiption is bad and the iPad location service is using GPS only. My advice to Skydemon users: Don‘t upgrade the iPad until the problems are fixed...

SkyDemon was almost unusable on my iPad Air 2 running iOS 12.0 when flying on Saturday morning.
While SkyDemon was tracking/logging my position and providing the usual airspace alerts, any attempt to pan or zoom the map would result in a complete freeze that would take around a minute or so to recover from. Even the ‘What’s Here’ menu would freeze on screen in the process of trying to get the map back to following my position.
I only experienced this issue in flying mode, planning mode is working flawlessly.
I am running SkyDemon 3.10.4.132 and was using my iPad’s internal GPS as usual - which has always worked flawlessly. No other devices connected wirelessly or physically. I always fly with mobile data turned off, or with the iPad in airplane mode to avoid interference/extend battery life. My iPad also has plenty of free storage space - it’s prime use is for SkyDemon, so not many other apps installed.
I hope a solution can be found.

SkyDemon seemed OK until about 30 minutes into a local flight until the screen froze and at first I thought it might have temporarily lost the GPS signal (iPad Mini with Garmin GLO). I was close to my home base at this time so no need to use it for navigation and I didn't look at it again until after landing, and when it appeared that the recorded track was complete except that it ceased at 3 miles on final and the display had frozen again. I'd never seen this behaviour before installing iOS 12.

So, been using my older iPad mini 2 (iOS 11.4.1 with SD 3.10.1) for the last 4 days, with long flights and requiring lots of touchscreen interaction inflight.
Although, generally its been performing better than my newer iPad mini 4 (iOS 12.0 with SD 3.10.4) did the weekend before, I have been experiencing freezing and restarts - even on the older iOS. I suspect the restarts / freezing on my older iPad could be due to battery age as iOS 11 introduced CPU throttling when the battery underperforms.
Anyway, I'm now stuck between two evils. I really want to use my newer iPad mini 4 with the faster cpu, but I haven't been able to successfully downgrade to iOS 11.4.1. I have the ipsw file for it but the option key / restore using iTunes on my mac isn't bringing up the file browser. Its always forcing an install of the latest iOS. I've done countless google searches and I understand the instructions, but iTunes isn't playing ball. iTunes/iCloud backups are meaningless, as they don't backup the firmware so be warned.
UPDATE: Re the iTunes restore, I've successfully downgraded to 11.4.1. Turns out the option key isn't recognised over screen sharing (I use a mac mini for all backups and remotely connect to it via my MacBook). Phew!!

We have reproduced the lagging issue on iOS 12. After thoroughly profiling it, we've so far determined the problem is deep within the graphical drawing routines of iOS. As for why it gets worse over time, we have no idea.
My main job today is to perform further instrumentation to determine if there's any way we can temporarily work around it by changing the manner in which we perform certain drawing, however this appears to be a problem with the operating system so it's unclear whether I will be successful and even if I am, it's likely to only be a temporary fix. I will report back tomorrow.

Turning off Virtual Radar when it's got laggy appears to solve the problem. Can anyone else confirm?

Tim, I noticed Virtual Radar was always the longest to finish loading/updating after interacting with the route/map. But sorry to say I’ve not tried with it turned off yet.

We have found what Apple have broken, and changed SkyDemon so that it uses alternative functionality. No compromise has been made while doing that, and 3.10.5 is now on its way to release. It will suffer no slowdown on iOS 12.

I see there is an update for RunwayHD to solve rendering issues as well. Looks like Apple strikes again🙄 Will hold off updating until Tim’s fix arrives.

aRTy, SkyDemon's IFR features are used by thousands of IFR pilots across Europe. When used with the excellent free route finding and briefing service Autorouter, together they should be all you need.

Tim, thank you so much to you and the SD team for working hard to identify and resolve the issue. It’s much appreciated. I’ve actually just completed a DFU restore of my iPad in an attempt to troubleshoot it.. wish I’d checked in on here this morning

Looking good so far. Just updated SD with the latest version 3.10.5 on my iPhone 7 (iOS 12) - planning mode is much better now, will keep an eye on it over the next few days. Well done SD team. Thanks I’m not brave enough to update my iPad to iOS 12 just yet - will let the dust settle for a few weeks. I’ve learnt my lesson.

I finally got an ‘Update to iOS12’ notification yesterday on my iPad Mini 3, so as the new SD update containing the ‘fix’ is also on the App Store, I decided to update both today and go flying... iOS to iOS12.0 and SD to version 3.10.5.134, with data from PilotAware.
Happy to report that everything appears to be working fine - at least over 2 x 30 minute flights.
Regards
Peter

Hi, I am running the latest version of Sky Demon (with the IOS 12 fix) on my iPad mini 4 cellular - IOS 12.
I noticed today during a flight that the SkyDemon DI is slow to update and appears to only update every 2-3 seconds. I am sure it updated more fluidly previously. During the flight, the DI was minimised and not expanded out into the fully circular HSI. When I returned home, I tried it out on simulation mode and found that it does the same, when I pull out the minimised DI into the fully circular HSI, it appears to update more fluidly than when it is minimised.
Is this normal?
Dan.

Hi,
Like DanJonesUK I flew today for the first time since I updated my iPad mini 2 to ios12 and with the latest SD release. On both the outbound and return legs of the flight all worked fine for about 30 minutes, the app then became initially laggy and over a further 5 mins slowed further until it became unusable. I rebooted the iPad and the cycle repeated.
I note that the latest SD version says it fixes the ios12 problems but in my case this is not the case. I’m a fairly new SD user having recently converted from using a Garmin 695 (which is frustratingly difficult to plan on but I must say was always 100% reliable!) so grateful of any advice. Lesson 1 perhaps is to put the iPad under config management and not update the firmware until proven!
Best regards, Tim

Hi Tim, I am running SkyDemon 3.10.5.134. The Map lagging has gone, but the DI is laggy when minimised, it was updating every 3 seconds in flight yesterday, it seemed to update quicker than this previous.
Running on an IPad Mini 4 Cell, no external devices IOS 12. Updated to IOS 12.0.1 this morning and it’s still the same.
Could the previous issue with the maps also impact the refresh of the DI? It does this both in real flight using the GPS and simulation mode.
Dan.

+xTim, you have SkyDemon 3.10.4. You need to update your SkyDemon to 3.10.5. Tim (and Dan), thank you both for your prompt replies. Seems I made a newbie error in that I have been regularly accepting the chart updates but didnt realise that I had to go back to the App Store to manually load the SD updates. So, in fact, I was running 3.10.0.124. No wonder perhaps that I was experiencing problems once I'd loaded iOS12. For interest Dan I'm using an iPad Mini 2 Cellular 128MB.
Weather permitting I'll be flying again next Wednesday and I'll gladly give feedback on any DI lag issues if I experience them.
Cheers again, Tim
