The title says it all. In the map on my iPad, how do I extend VOR radials? I am planning a route which takes me on a 180 degree southbound direction and I want to follow this course till I intercept he 45 degree outbound radial of a VOR southwest of my location. In the map I would like to extend the VORs radials to see which exact radial would be best to track...

How can I do this?

There are two ways of doing this:-

1. Long press on your chosen VOR, select the VOR from the list in the pop-up window, and select Track Waypoint. The position report at the top of the screen will then provide you with a continuously updated distance to the VOR and which radial your are on. When you see your desired radial appear in the position report, you will know that you have intercepted it.

2. Long press on your chosen VOR, select the VOR from the list in the pop-up window, and select Track Radial. Enter the value of the radial you wish to intercept and hit enter. SD will then draw a narrow magenta line out from the VOR along the line of your chosen radial so that you can see when and where on the chart your track intercepts the radial. As before the position report at the top of the screen will provide you with a continuously updated distance to the VOR and which radial you are on.

Needles to say, you need to be in flying or simulation mode.

In flying or simulation mode, long press on your chosen VOR (or any waypoint for that matter), and in the pop-up, select your chosen VOR (or other waypoint) from the list, then select Track Radial.

Yes I was aware of the possibility while flying/simulating, but I want to see the radials when planning so my question stands, but with a clarification: how to extend the VOR radials when planning, before flying? I want to know which radial to intercept before I get there...

Is is possible?

No currently possible in the way you describe. However, if you know the point on your route where you want to intercept a radial, use the Ruler function between this point and your chosen VOR. This will provide you with the radials to and from the VOR and the distance. If you want a greater degree of accuracy, create a temporary waypoint at the point of intercept and then use the Ruler.

Tim – Can we have the Ruler function on the PC version please? It would be extremely useful for planning purposes.

Thanks for the reply. Extending the ruler is the feature I've been using so far, but doesn't this show only the magnetic and true degrees and not the radial? This probably shows lack of knowledge, but how are the radials set? Based on true or magnetic north? Or something else? I'm guessing True as the magnetic would change from year to year....



I would also love a feature which allows me to "press and hold" over a VOR and hit something like "extend radials" and thin (see-through?) lines for each radial would extend over the entire screen. That way when I am flying - or planning - I see which radial I am currently on and I can put that into the aircraft... Possible?

VOR radials are always magnetic.



I don't see how such a function could be implemented because there are an infinite number of radials. However, I can see that being able "press and hold" on a VOR and then by moving your finger, drag out a radial, would be a very useful function, but I have no idea whether or not it would be possible to program such a function. I can agree that it might be a better solution. However I was just thinking about the 360 radials, not an infinite number... But again I do see that however thin the lines might be, it could cluster up the map when the function is in use. This is just an idea and I'm thinking it should be up to the developers to figure out the best way to include such a feature I often use radials when flying to pinpoint my exact location (dme+radial or two radials intercepting), and even more so to know when to make my turn (in addition to tracking time) and I would love to do this in sky daemon

using the ruler does not provide radials as far as I know, only magnetic and true heading from/to the VOR, and this is not the same...?

If you're using SD, why do you need a radial + DME or two intersecting radials to determine your exact position, when the position of the SD aircraft icon on the magenta course line tells you exactly where you are? Or am I missing something.

By the way, a VOR radial is the magnetic course to/from the VOR station.

Sky Painter: yes of course the easier way is to use the gps feature, but I'm a bit old school. I like to plan so that I can fly just as safely with no iPad or drained batteries etc. Besides, I find it quite I bit fun to do it the old way. And if the VOR radials are based on magnetic north; are they updated yearly with the current variation?

Shifu: I guess that is one way of doing it. I am coming to realize that I'm quite unique in the way I like to use this application :p
