When in chart view I click on a specific airport to get its charts, and then try to go back to the charts view, SD just beeps no matter what key is input.  The only way out is to crash out .....

Am I doing something wrong?

The only thing I can think of is to check your printer is set up correctly and that you have a sensible printer set as the default. This will affect the way SkyDemon generates print output, which includes airfield plates even when viewing onscreen.
