What this results into is a jungle of settings and options that confuses everybody and makes nobody happy. Good software has to steer a judicious course when it comes what to include and what not to include as a function. And Tim does an admirable job in that department!!! -- Chris. Wow, what a productive statement. Thanks for that great moment. And your opinion to what is really discussed here? Or better "???" I a) forgot your post concerning the subject which was of course clear enough on the topic and b) of course I recognize Tims (and the whole SD-Teams) fabulous job they do! and c) of course he has to keep an eye on the whole product. So sorry again if I replied a bit "too straight." - but I tried to fight for this (in my opinion) very, really useful feature ;-) Kind regards, Renzo

The latest SkyDemon Android beta has an auto-zooming feature which we are prototyping. We haven't yet decided whether or not we will ship the feature, but it's there for feedback. Refer to the 3.8.2 thread for more information about how it works.

I love how Sky Demon zooms into the airport when I start my flight but I cannot figure out how to get the application to auto zoom right into my destination airport when I land, which would make taxiing much easier.
Appreciate your help.

For my local airfield SD zooms when I land so I can see the airfield layout.
I didn't have to make any setting changes.

I wish mine did!
It starts off zoomed in but as soon as I change the zoom level during the flight, it won't auto zoom any more on approach or landing, I have to do it manually. I had a look for a setting that might change this but couldn't find anything.

I can't edit my posts here either.. I wanted to add that I use SD on my iPad, maybe the autozoom is only for Android?

+x+xWe've looked into automatic zooming depending on the phase of flight before, and asked for pilots' opinions. Unfortunately there didn't seem to be a consensus so we have so far not implemented automatic zooming. The exception is zooming in to ground features when you land and out of ground features (back to your nominated preferred zoom level) when you take off, which is an unambiguous feature to implement. Sounds funny that there is no Consensus.
In my eyes this is a more than useful feature. One of the most impressing features of another program is exactly an automatic zooming in as you come closer to your airport,, including a Change to the (georeferenced - surprise, surprise :-) ) Taxiway Chart.
Approaching and Landing at an unknown airfileld is for me the most challenging Phase of flight, especially when you descended early to pattern altitude.
Therefore I would love to several more Settings concerning Autozoom or swithcing to Chart view.
- distance or time to an Airport at which an Autozoom process starts
- distance or time to an airfield at which the Approach Chart is displayed in map.
Comment. There are some airfields which have more than ONE Chart. In These situations NO Chart is automatically displayed. I learnt that SD does not know which one to Display. This is okay. Egelsbach EDFE is a good example. It has 2 Charts available, therefore None is displayed automatically. EDFE is a busy place surrounded and covered by Airspace C and CTRs. So, approaching this airfileld is not the right Situation to be confused waiting for the Chart to appear and then having to select it manually while coming closer and closer.
A configurable time/distance at which the Chart appears or not would be helpful. At the Moment at least the Setting is too Close.
- max. zoom Level or zoom Level of the Approach Chart itself
At the Moment sitting on the ground I can see often only the Apron where my aircraft is located due to the Maximum available zoom level. But I would like to have an Impression where to go next. A more conservative zoom in would be useful.
This option gets my vote. Zooming in as you come closer to your airport, including a Change to the georeferenced Taxiway Chart. Now, when approaching SD asks for runway, right hand/left hand, downwind or... - so maybe there could be a choice here about zoomning and taxi way or as earlier stated and option. I am sure Tim and his team is working on a taxi way solution.

Auto Zoom has now been available in our beta programme for most of the week, and the feedback has been excellent. It will ship in the forthcoming 3.8.2 version of SkyDemon.
SkyDemon has zoomed you right into an airfield when you actually land for quite a while, and auto zooming does not change this. We only do it if we have vector airfield details or a georeferenced plate available for it, though, otherwise there's no point.
