Having updated to Version 2.0, I've just connected my iPaq H6340 to update the Skydemon Mobile on it.

In the past I have used the 'Install Skydemon Mobile' option from the main menu and then selected the 'Update and existing device' option.

I tried to do it this way this time, but I get a .net error exception it give you the option to continue, but I get another error exception message and if you keep selecting 'continue' you just get stuck in an error loop.

I thought I'd try syncing to the device anyway using the 'Sync' option and it recognised that my iPaq was running an old version and then proceeded to update it before syncing data.

Following the update and sync I've now started Skydemon Mobile on my iPaq and it works fine.

You're correct that sync now handles all software update and licensing stuff, but I'm concerned about the apparent bug in installation. Can you reproduce this and post the full error info? Cheers!

Hi Tim,

I've replicated the fault and I'm going to email you screendumps of the error messages and text files of the full error details.

Hopefully you'll find them useful.

To summarise the problem, I connect my iPaq and let active sync start. I've set my iPaq to backup everytime I connect, so I let it backup, which only takes a couple of seconds.

I then launch 'Install SkyDemon Mobile' from the main program menu. I instantly get the first error message. I click continue, which ignores the error message and get the Install menu 'Install SkyDemon Mobile to a new device' or 'Upgrade SkyDemon Mobile on an existing device'. I select to upgrade, which is when I get the second error message. From that point on, you cannot go any further. If you select continure, you go back to the install menu, but if I select upgrade again, I get the same error message.

Upgrading via the Sync option in SkyDemon Planning works perfectly.

Thanks,

Dom

ps Really liking the new version!

This turned out to be a problem whereby an old shortcut was left in the start menu.

Starting a few versions ago, the option to install SkyDemon Mobile was removed from the start menu. In SkyDemon 2.0, it's under Setup -> Device Connectivity Options.

I am having trouble syncing with my mobile device. Version 1.4 was OK, now I have version 2.0. The device is showing as connected in activesync but if I choose device connectivity options, install skydemon mobile, It starts to update then aborts with message 'operation failed, could not create remote file'

If I instead choose go flying, sync with sd mobile, I get 'operation failed, failed to locate your sd mobile device, a connection between this pc and a sd mobile device requires that MSActivesync be installed. Alternatively, insert an sd card containing sdmobile into this pc.'

So, for some reason it thinks activesync is not there! (At least some of the time)

Anyone else got this problem?

After intermittent Active Sync problems, I always use a card reader. This is also much safer as no chance of "bricking" mobile device which I managed recently as I changed from Active Sync to Mass Storage while connected to PC. Cheapo Chines turned off & wd not restart, even after reset. Its on its way back to China  .. no idea if I will see it again!!.

I thought skydemon's prefered method was using activesync. If so, why? Is there any difference as to where files are written when installing via sdcard or activesync?

The only real advantage of ActiveSync over the other methods is that the unit stays booted and running whilst you are updating it.

This is of little relevance 99.99% of the time so I wouldn't worry about it.

Just do whatever works for you with the minimum amount of hassle.

ActiveSync is the best method to use, though either will work. With ActiveSync your SkyDemon unit stays on, and a little message flashes onscreen when sync is complete and the software loads the new data in real time.

We've been doing some work on making the install/sync process more robust ready for the next version. If you encounter an error during install such as the one you mentioned, it probably means SkyDemon is already running and therefore the files can't be overwritten. After a failed installation attempt like this a sync may not work properly (something we've addressed).

Install should only be used to initially install SkyDemon Mobile on a device. After that, sync takes care of most things including upgrading the version of SkyDemon on the device.
