Hi Folks,

Has anyone tried the various charts/ipad mini setting to determine what combination works best during night flying?
If so - fancy sharing your preferred set-up?

Hi Hugh,

my preferred setting is "Sky Demon High Contrast Map" with brightness set to minimum. Although it should be a little darker, it works quite well.

Cheers

Jens

Thanks for the hint. I did the setting and will try it next time. My night flight setting was quite acceptable for me except for flying NVIS (still a little bit to bright). So this maybe the solution.

To further reduce brightness (very useful for night VFR flying) to to iOS/Settings/Accessibility. Here you can select "Reduce White Point". This basically dims down the display, and now the brightness slider (in control centre) works from very dim to medium. It's like low gearing in a proper 4x4 car (if you guys can relate to this ;-)

‌You can configure it in a way that "Reduce White Point" becomes available (as one of several Accessibility related options) when triple-clicking the home button (or - if like in my case this is the only Accessibility option you need - to toggle between normal and dim when triple-clicking the home button.

‌A very useful feature for us pilots that Apple introduced not too long ago.

Set the light to minimum, configure the triple button under iOS to do the zoom to 100% but darker (ca 30% more down you get the light to min). But, as there are some important things like MIL night routes and night airspaces are not shown in Skydemon I advice not to use Skydemon for night flying. Advice gets strong against if night flying in German airspace is planned.

Cant concur. Nobody says to limit yourself to SD.
Check the military  website‌ (https://www.milais.org/publications.php) f‌or anything on your way and then use SD enroute - too much effort ?
I have had (very) friendly ATC (radar) every time and they help you as long as they sense you are prepared.
And there not that much going on in the usual flight levels‌...

Great Tip Tim about the reduce white point option.
Thanks

I have my first night VFR tonight and preparing for it I wanted to find a way to switch Skydemon to night mode.
So naturally I came to this forum and started searching.
I'm a bit surprised that Skydemon has no dedicated night mode. Sure it's probably not as popular as in the US I guess.
but it would be a shame to have to discard SD for night flying because of the lack of this feature.

So I'd like to add my voice to request for enhancement and add a night mode to Skydemon, if possible.
In the meantime, I setup my Ipad to enable ultra low brightness( decrease white point) with a triple push of the home button
I hope that will be enough to keep night vision Smile

In the meantime,

Have you not tried the ‘SkyDemon High Contrast’ chart style, found under the Mapping Tools control bottom right of the screen?

@kobaje, if you are flying on NVIS your problem is more likely to be the device screen display light frequencies than a SkyDemon setting.

Cockpit lighting for NVG/NVIS is a very complex and specialist area - a consumer device is unlikely to meet the required compatibility specs unless modified.
