I've just updated my Nexus 7 to v5 or lolipop or whatever Google's latest iteration is called.
The problem is non of the 'keep screen' apps seem to work on it now, including the one I had on the machine.
This is serious for navigating as the most you can hold the screen for using the settings screen is 30mins.

So if you're asked to upgrade don't, unless you know more about this stuff than I do ( not difficult)

And if you do know about this stuff can you help me with something that will keep the SkyDemon screen alive for more than 30 mins.

Just returned from a trip to the family and tested 2 Nexus 7s - one with 5.1 and the other on 4.4.3.

The 5.1 update is certainly better than 5.02, but whereas the tablet running 4.4.3 was totally stable and worked perfectly, the 5.1 kept dropping out of SD requiring a reload and another 'Go Flying' press.

I'm not sure if it is the tablet itself that is the problem or the OS, but I'll be taking SD off the 'Lollipop' tablet as it is pretty much unusable. I will be watching for future developments and to see the OS is much more resilient before even thinking of moving to 5.x

I did the same yesterday: I used two Nexus 7 (2013), one with Android 5.02 and one with 4.4.3 and SD 3.2.1.22629 on both.

The android 4.4.3 Nexus run absolutely stable on a 6 hours flight!!! It performance in planning mode is ok.

The android 5.0.2 crashed after 30 minutes flight! The performance in planning mode is bad and it occurs a lot of system messages like that: SD is not responding: wait or end?

For my opinion the Android 5.x and SD are not compatible. I think it is not a problem of Nexus 7.

For sure I will keep Android 4.4.3.

My Nexus 7 was upgraded from 5.0.2 to 4.4.4 and yesterday it was absolutely stable during 78 min flight.

I had problems with SD "dropping out" during navigation after I updated my Nexus 7 (2013) to Android 5.0.2.  I re-flashed my Nexus back to Android 4.4.4 and have had no problems with SD since then.

I am considering this course of action also, but I have no idea how to go about it. Is it very difficult? Do I have to root my device (whatever that means)? Can you point me in the right direction please?

Do you mean DOWNGRADED from 5.0.2 to 4.4.4 or UPGRADED from 4.4.4 to 5.0.2? You can't 'upgrade' from a newer to an older version.

I only ask because I'm one of the many experiencing problems with 5.0.2 and would like to 'downgrade' back to 4.4.4, except that I'm not sure how to do this.
