Ok...after being a long term skydemon user, I've finally gone and bought an iPad mini just so I can run skydemon on my knee and do my flight planning anywhere!

Things are a little different between ipad and pc but two things are really bugging me.

First one is despite putting in my home airfield in the planning options, why does it keep showing 'truleigh hill' airfield as my route starting point when I do 'route' and 'create a route' from the top menu?

Second, on TAF and METAR tabs is there any way of turning off the decoded view and have it default to the much quicker to read and understand (for me) Raw view? I just can't get on with decoded view..

I'm loving the iPad version!

I've just bought the ipad mini as well.

What you are getting isn't what happens on mine. Once I set the home airfield via Setup >Planning options > Home Airfield it defaults to that setting each time. Same with Taf & metars. Try logging out after changing your settings and then log back in and that might solve the problem. I know you will know how to do it, but just in case you haven't found it yet -Setup > Log Out Good Luck

Thanks for the response. I had tried the logout and in again, i should have said. I have deanland set as my home airfield and it goes there when I press home, but route 'create route' still wouldn't recognise it as my start airfield.

So, I've removed the programme off the mini and reinstalled it again. Now the Taf and metars are staying in raw format, so that's now sorted, thanks!

But... Whenever I go to route and create a route, it insists on brings up a grass strip north west of shoreham called truleigh farm, not my base airfield!

tim, is this a known behaviour?

I take your point, but the 'home' button isn't meant for the 'create a new route' method of planning on SD.

Have a look at the extract below which I've taken from the SD documentation page

Your Home Airfield

The 'Home' button on the toolbar enables you to quickly zoom the map back to your chosen home airfield, avoiding the necessity to search for the waypoint each time you wish to view it on the map. In addition to zooming to your home airfield, SkyDemon also gathers local weather and nearby NOTAM, so you can see at a glance the conditions close to home without needing to first plot a route.

You can also choose your preferred map scale, so when the map pans to your home airfield after hitting the Home button it also zooms in or out to the scale you have specified. Pressing and holding the orange scale button in the left-hand corner of the map on your iPad will also have the effect of zooming in or out to your selected scale preference, wherever you are on the map.

To set your home airfield and preferred zoom level you'll need to open up the Setup menu and select Planning Options, where you will see the option to do so within the General section of the window.

Thanks nje, I can certainly see how the "Home" airfield set in the planning allows me to push the home button and takes me to my airfield. It does that both on Skydemon for PC and on the iPad Mini.

I acknowledge that the home airfield setting in preferences doesn't do anything more than allowing the map to be centered on the Home Airfield.

But:
What I still can not understand is why the function differs between PC and iPad. Take this for example:

With my home airfield set as EGKL in both cases (possibly irrelevant but I mention it anywayWink):

PC: "Route", "New", it automatically populates the last route start airfield. (EGKL in my case) so I dont have to type it in again.
iPad: "Route", "Create a Route" and up comes TRULEIGH FARM in the From field.

What have I ever done to deserve being blighted by TRULEIGH ****** FARM on my iPad Smile

TIM help!

I see what you mean, mine comes up with Ashcroft, and I'm based at Sleap. If you have a lot of your regular routes on your PC why not transfer them accross to your ipad, it might save you a bit of time in the future

Hi Ridders,

I'm no help,on the Home function but I concur with you about the weather data. I did in fact post a suggestion about this a few weeks back.

Carltn16 -As far as I can see that is catered for, unless I've misunderstood your post. If you go into tafs or metars then click on 'raw data' in top left corner to bring up the raw data version and then log out of skydemon, when you log back in, it will be the default setting

I think SkyDemon remembers the last airfield you create a route from and suggests that as a default when you go to Create Route, BUT this is overridden, where available, by a quick location lookup which will put the nearest airfield to your current position in there as a default.

As Tim highlighted above. Navigational softwares commonly and logically assume that the aeroplane would have to be FLOWN from its LAST known position. Alternatively, it can default to the current GPS position, which MAY or MAY NOT be the home airfield, or where the aeroplane actually is.

I personally prefer it as is with this logical sequencing rather than default to a certain given airfield.

Very Newbytheway
