I have asked the question elsewhere and been ignored so I will ask here

Currently I plan on a destop PC, squirt the route to a Chinese GPS unit and then on return squirt the track back again.

Can I continue to do this (easily) if I used an iPad (Mini) in flight, or is the transfer between desktop PC and unit more complicated, thus that it would be easier to plan on the Apple (spit!) device?

Happy New Year all

Easiest way is probably e-mail.

Just e-mail the route to yourself and open it on the iPad.

Likewise, you can e-mail the post flight log to yourself and drop it into the Logs folder on the PC and it will appear alongside all your previous ones synced from the WinCE unit.

So the answer is 'No - it's not as simple as plugging in a bit of wire and hitting sync'

That's what I'd feared.

Thanks Steve.

Its easier! You dont need the PC, I have the iPad mini 3G, plan on the ipad mini, print plogs off wirelessly and go fly. Tafs and Metar updated while you fly, brilliant! I just did my first flight with the iPad mini previously using an iPad 3 and its excellent, just the right size on my knee in a Robin HR200, easy to see and work with, it makes flying a real pleasure now, amazing how much of the workload is reduced, good old SD.

I'm uncertain that I would rate that as 'easier'

I work at a powerful desktop PC day in and day out, it is the simplest thing in the world to plan a flight on SD, using a large screen and a mouse, print out the PLOG at the touch of a single button and then squirt it to the cockpit unit down a length of wire.

I can't see fannying around on a small touchscreen as being easier. How exactly do you print from an iPad mini?

Desktop to iPad is simple as long as your iPad is connected to the internet, just select: [Route] | [Save to Cloud] on the PC and open from cloud on the iPad using [Route] | [Open from Cloud].

To get your route onto a non SkyDemon GPS you need to either use a USB cable or plug the SD card into your PC.

I generally fly with a cheapy GPS unit, but also take an iPad with an external GPS as a backup
