I have a new Dragon Touch X10 Android and have copied a number of routes onto it from my PC. However, I have been unable to sync. When I touch the "Go Flying" option I get an error box entitled "SkyDemon for Android" and the message "There was an error when trying to access GPS information". The only option then is to press the OK button which only removes the error box. My Android is not GPS equipped and I am only trying to sync between the two devices. I have tried it with two mobile units. I would appreciate some advice please and thank you in anticipation.

Graham,

When you touch "Go Flying) you are telling SkyDemon to start navigating.  To navigate SkyDemon needs to get a GPS fix, hence your error message.
If you wish to share routes between different devices, I suggest that you save the routes to the Cloud on one device, and then open routes from the cloud on the other device. Once opened from the cloud, the routes may be saved locally on the second device if you wish.

Hi George

In an earlier posting Tim Dawson said that the sync option had been taken from the menu at the top of the PC screen (F9) and put under the Go Flying drop-down menu. That's where it is on the PC and works fine. If required, the GPS function needs to be started from the same menu. I do not get that option on my Android as it seems to expect me to want to use GPS. I do not have a problem with saving the routes on the Android, just syncing the mobile devices with it.

Cheers

Graham.

Hi Graham

Tim will correct me if I'm wrong, but I think I'm right in saying that on the PC Go Flying > Sync with SkyDemon Mobile F9 refers specifically to SD's own mobile device which is a WinCE device and which has to have a cabled connection to the PC. In the early days of SD, it was the only mobile device available, but with the advent of SD for iOS, and later, SD for Android, the SkyDemon Mobile device effectively became obsolete, although I am sure there are probably still users of the device out there. I'm not even sure whether or not it is still in production or available.

As George has pointed out, the way to sync iOS and Android mobile devices with your PC is to save Routes, Settings, Aircraft Profiles etc from your PC to the Cloud, then download from the Cloud to your mobile device and then save locally if necessary. The Go Flying option on your mobile device is just that and nothing more. You state that your mobile device has no built-in GPS, so in order to be able to use SD on your mobile device for navigation, you will need to purchase an external GPS unit, such as Bad Elf (there are others), which will connect to your mobile device via Bluetooth.

Just a tip regarding saving your route from cloud to your local in-flight navigation device (I got caught by this a few time).
Like you I plan using my laptop at home and then save routes to the cloud. I then download from the cloud to my navigation device (Samsung S3 smartphone).
If you have poor or no internet connection at your airfield make sure you have saved your downloaded route  (from cloud) to your local device before leaving home.
Otherwise, just as you are ready to go flying, you find you can't access your pre-planned route from the cloud!

Good point Tony. I've been caught out this way as well and ended up trying to re-create my route "on the hoof" from memory.

Hi Both

Just to clarify, the Android is my new tablet for planning (I normally use a PC) and I have two GPS-equipped mobile devices for use in-flight. Being a dinosaur, Mike, one is a SkyDemon SD unit and the other a 3rd Party device. I can access the Cloud on my PC and also the Android tablet but not the mobile units. Although I can download routes from the PC to both mobiles I am unable to do the same from the Android. From your comments it appears that your mobiles are able to download routes direct from the Cloud but neither of mine does - there is no option to do so. I'm in communication with SkyDemon's Hannah so I will see what she has to say. Thanks to you both for your help so far.

Graham.

Hi All

Just heard from Hannah and it appears that my antiquated mobiles are the culprits - more expense involved!

Anyway, thank you all for your assistance and happy flying.

Graham.
