I've been using Plan for a few weeks with good success.  I've been mulling over buying a secondhand Garmin 196 or Pilot III GPS to receive data from Plan - but may instead go to a Windows Mobile device.  I won't use it as a phone as I already use a Blackberry.  Can anyone recommend an ideal WM phone for this purpose?  I assume there are advantages to starting out on 6.5?  Advice gratefully received.

I personally think HTC phones are hard to beat.

I use an HTC Touch Diamond 2, with a very large screen (for a mobile) and 800x480 resolution for clear mapping. HTC recently released a free upgrade to WM6.5 for this device, which I'm now using. It works great with SkyAngel.

I have a HTC X7500 which is excellent with Skyangel and MemoryMap.

It's not that good a phone, too big and operates in "speaker phone" mode without earphones, and the camera is "poor", and that's being kind, but it's brilliant in the air, the screen's big enough and bright enough to see in the cockpit, and works in portrait mode.

I use a MyGuide4200 - 11cm/4.3" screen - comes with car and mains charger and suction mount.

With some help I have SkyInflight up and running. Quite easy now I have done it. Just loaded the latest version.

Not a phone (but you say you don't need that), has a good size VGA screen and good battery life (>3 hrs).
