Offline mode

I see from looking at 'Forthcoming version' that the option to select 'Offline mode' is to be removed.

Could I ask that the decision to do so is reconsidered?

I currently used two iPads for navigation - one large format Pro running the current public release as my primary source, and a second Pro with the latest beta which I carry as a backup in case of issues with the primary one. Both are logged in so can be fully up to date with charts, AIPS, NOTAM etc. The former sits on my lap, the second readily to hand in the cockpit.

I also have an iPhone mounted on a sucker mount in my eyeline for traffic awareness, running an offline copy of SD, and used only to display the full-screen traffic page. This is always at the latest version, but is otherwise rarely updated, contains no charts other than the UK and is not used for planning or navigation.

As a beta tester I also use my personal iPhone for testing which I keep offline, but will juggle with logons when I wish to test on a smaller device than the iPad.

With the current restriction on two portable devices being logged on at the same time, if I understand the intention correctly, deprecating the offline option will remove my ability to carry a logged-on device as a navigation backup and a separate traffic device concurrently. It will also make beta testing on more than one device type less convenient as it will require more frequent logging on and off. Logging on when airborne just isn't possible if I needed to revert to my backup iPad.

Given that logging on and off between Windows devices is much less critical in the real world than tablet devices - as I'd imagine very few people navigate with a full Windows version - if the change were to go ahead as planned, please could you as mitigation either allow 3+1 rather than 2+2 active devices, or grant an additional allowance for beta devices.

Many thanks

Hi Tim / All

I did two test flights on Thursday evening with 2 x ‘older’ mini iPads (Mini 2 and Mini 3) - both running SD Beta 3.14.0.247 on iOS 12.4.6 ‘in parallel’ for both flights (they won’t update to anything newer), plus my old Galaxy S5 phone running SD 3.13.7.18568 ‘logged out’ as an ‘emergency backup’ on Android 6.0.1.

All 3 devices performed as advised with no issues observed, so I am happy with that.

Postscript: This does of course mean that any route or other data (including airfield plates, notams, wether, etc) which might be needed on the ‘‘emergency backup device’ MUST be loaded onto that device before your second ‘active’ device pushes the third one ‘offline’. From personal experience that should always be done on any ‘backup’ device before flight anyway and is only a minor inconvenience.

Regards

Peter
