Hello, I'm new to the forum and thinking about getting SkyDemon to run on my new iPad. I will probably get the 30 day trial first to try it out, however I been talking to a couple of people who already have SkyDemon and they say it's the best GPS investment they have made, so I'm likely to buy a subscription after the 30 days. Before I do I have the following questions:

1. What does the initial subscription include that the renewal does not? I'm assuming this is the case because it costs more.

2. If for some reason I decide not to renew the subscription at the end of the subscription year will the GPS Navigation/Chart etc still function, just with out the updates?

1) Nothing - there is no difference between the service you receive in year 1 and subsequent years. I guess the best way to think of the lower price for subsequent years is that of a 'loyalty discount'

2) You won't receive any chart updates, nor will any of the live data feeds work (weather, NOTAMs etc.). Navigation mode will drop back into demo mode where it only runs for a short time. Effectively, the software drops back into the state it would be in if it was unlicensed.

Sorry to resurrect this post but just for clarification, if the initial higher subscription fee expires and say a year lapses, can you then pay the lower annual subscription to reactivate it or do you have to pay the initial higher fee again. As there have been occasions where I have not flown for a year

Kind regards

Hi,

Just to let you know that I sent an email to SD last week, asking the same question, and received this response:

"The discounted renewal price of £89 is held for a grace period of 6 weeks after your subscription expires, after which time your account is no longer active and is not eligible for renewal. This means that if you decided not to renew you subscription after the first year you would be liable to pay the full £179 subscription price a year later if you wanted to start using the software again."

Hope that helps Smile

Thanks for that info Treas0n....Just as I thought.....They've got you really by the short and curlies havent't they !! Think SkyDemon should reconsider that one.....It's not as if there are high setup costs for administering the account, I would imagine that is all automatic....and you've already paid the extra premium in software royalties on the initial outlay !!

That's a pretty standard software subscription model.

The change you want from a business model perspective would be to charge the same each year, which is fine but would obviously mean a higher renewal cost.

Subscription software is a much better way to sell complex software as it allows ongoing funding for new development work. i think Skydemon have their pricing about bang on - just over the cost of an hours flying for most of us...
