We're using latest version of SkyDemon on an iPad2, with a GNS 5870 and recently a Garmin GLO.

No problem with Bluetooth connection on both GPS units (separately) but we're getting a continual Searching for satellites message on Sky Demon when we 'Go Flying'.

Somewhere I read a routine for rebooting (?) the iPad which seems to cure this problem.

Could anyone please remind us of the details?

Please try this:-

Go into Bluetooth and 'forget' your device

Privacy > Location Services and turn off Find My iPad
Privacy > Location Services > System Services and turn everything off except Status Bar Icon
Privacy > Location Services and double check that SkyDemon is definitely ON

Hard reboot your device (press and hold Volume + Home together until you see the Apple logo)

When the unit boots back up, confirm that the Location Services icon is not present in the status bar. If it appears, you missed something above.

Re-add the GPS device via Bluetooth menu

Many thanks, Steve. Yes, that worked, although it was initially convinced (Start Again/Yellow a/c) that I was in Oaksey Park (where I was, 2 days ago).

Questions:

1) Not something I'd be keen on doing while flying. Should I go through that procedure routinely before flight?

2) Should I now go through the Location Services and switch them on? Some of the apps don't ask, some do.

3) And if I action (2) am I going to have the same problem again with SD?

4) What did I do wrong? Or does the iPad just get clogged up?

It's a permanent fix - once you've done it once, the issue shouldn't reoccur.

If you want to just turn one thing off at a time, the one which seems to make the most difference is 'Automatically Set Time-Zone'

The issue is (I believe) that if you leave those location services on, the iPad uses them the minute it is powered on, and therefore uses the WiFi location data.

If you then subsequently connect the bluetooth device, it simply doesn't get used.

Turning those settings off ensures that your bluetooth has paired before trying to access location data.
