I am planning a flight tomorrow from outside R112 to withinR112. I am perplexed as to how I activate a flight plan from a remote airfieldoutside of R112, say a grass strip? Do I call Cranfield, for example, oranother ATC unit once airborne to activate it, or do I have to do it on theground, if do how?

Then I assume I just cancel the flight plan when I land?

I do exactly that. First of all I would telephone your nearby ATC unit (Cranfield?) to check that they are happy to do this and then copy them in the flight plan addressees so that they will have a copy of your plan to hand when you call them.

Just call up after take-off and request activation of your plan and give them your take-off time. Don't leave the frequency (or enter R112!) until they have confirmed that your plan is activated then request a change to your en-route freq (Atlas North?).

If you have no suitable ATC unit nearby then you can ask London Info to activate your plan although they may be very busy and take a while to get your message through to - especially during the Olympics.

There's no need to close your flight plan in the UK on arrival. If landing abroad then ATC at your arrival airfield will close your plan, if your arrival airfield has no ATC then you must close it by phone immediately yourself or close it en-route with a nearby ATC unit whilst still in the air.

Have a look at this.
