Difficult to answer your question definitively as to the reason without more details.

You say you are running PilotAware. Presumably with ‘Mode C/S Select’ enabled in the Configure Setup and ‘Show Bearingless Traffic’ enabled in SkyDemon Navigation - Yes?

Are you also running a transponder? If so the ring will be generated by your own transponder unless you have selected Mode C/S + Filter in PAW Configure.

If not running a transponder, but have Mode C/S Selected, you should be seeing warning rings progressing from large green, through medium amber to small red as other transponder equipped aircraft approach (and the risk increases). You can tell if they are Mode C or Mode S by the text at the 12 o’clock position on the ring which will show an aircraft Reg if Mode S or simply ‘Mode ‘C’, plus in each case the current relative altitude. If you are ONLY seeing small red rings, these are either generated by your own transponder or by Mode S from high power commercial traffic (probably at high altitude).

If you are using a traffic detection such as pilotaware the red circle would indicate a bearingless target - a transponder mode C or mode S signal has been detected

Hello George,

Thank you for your message. You are right I am using PilotAware but this is a small, heavy red circle directly over my aircraft symbol and it goes away after a few seconds. I wondered if it was loss of GPS signal for a few seconds.

It should worry yo. Itt is warning your of a TPX-C equipped aircraft close by. Zoom in and read the vertical separation stated near the red circle. But first and foremost keep your eye outside and look for the 'target'. As it is TPX-C, no bearing information is available.

Very useful feature, in particular in countries where most GA traffic is NOT equipped with ADS-B OUT but rather still uses a normal transponder.

Can anyone tell me what it means when there is a small red circle directly over my aircraft when in flight?
