Contingency Fuel Calculation

By plume_tray - 3/30/2018 7:08:08 PM

Hi Tim

Thanks. Just to be clear, I don't have a corporate licence as I'm a freelancer, so I have a personal subscription which 99% of the time suits my needs.

I do however work closely with a few operators who do have corporate licences for multiple pilots and I'm trying to educate them to be more proactive with their feedback to their respective corporate managers.

Unfortunately, a common theme among pilots is to talk about what they do or don't like but not actually do anything about it, can't blame them if they have better things to worry about.

I'm a big fan of SD and its improvements. And I'm more than happy to contribute feedback and suggestions on their behalf, even though it's through an unofficial channel.

Never did get an answer to the original question.

Contingency fuel is calculated as whatever percentage you have specified multiplied by the enroute and diversion fuel added together.

Why are you calculating it on both cruise (trip) + diversion? Where does it say in EASA to do this?

Because that's the way we've always done it, and I don't know.

Sorry but Contingency fuel is only based on Trip fuel and doesn't include Diversion/Alternate fuel.

Contingency is there for unplanned factors, such as not getting the planned cruise level etc. There is no contingency added anywhere in the EASA regs or the previous UK National regs to Alternate fuel.

Is anyone able to confirm how SD calculates contingency fuel?

Reason I ask, I have 10% set in the aircraft profile for IFR, and if I set an Alternate, then it seems be calculating 10% of Cruise+Diversion.

Is this a fixed-wing thing? Most rotary ops manuals I have seen just calculate 10% of Cruise only. Is there a way to set it up for a Cruise only?

On another note, in the aircraft profile, the lowest value allowable for Holding Time is 10min. I would like the ability to set this to zero.

Ok, you'll need to encourage those corporate users to reach out to us directly though. We have corporate licenses for a reason, and there are some differences not just in terms of what sort of usage is allowed.

We will get the diversion fuel removed from the contingency part of the calculation for the next version.
