TCAS using Wifi

Hi All,

It would be possible to set the Wifi SSID of the PDA to a usefull value and enable 1/2/5 (call that X) second updates.

This would mean anyone in the area will receive updates on the location of the PDA. For Example a Wifi Scan will show

G-BMAA LAT LON Speed Heading ALT

In some form of packed HEX for example (to save space) as there is 32bytes for use.   On the Ground or other PDA flight stations, it can listen for Wifi SSID's and plot their locations on the map.

..and with a little more thought - what is the effective range of your PDA/mobile WiFi?

By the time you had a "TCAS" warning of the other "SkyAngel InFlight equipped" aircraft you would be able to see the colour of the other pilots eyes!

You will be surprised at how far wifi works... 500mtrs easily on clear spaces.

Its easy to dismiss things as 'crackpot', but it only takes one person to set a precedent BigGrin , and if Tim recons its a dumb idea, then so be it - I wont cry over it.

I was suggesting Wifi as most/all PDA's are wifi equiped - no extra equipment needed and for microlights, that is quite an important aspect as space in the cockpit not plentyfull.

There are 2 places where Wifi will work..

To a ground station (at an airfield were an antenna can receive the broadcasts from about 5km away)

Other Wifi enabled equipment - No necessarility SkyAngel - Can be any software, all it takes is collaboration with other authors.

But thats not my call BigGrin All I can do is thank Tim for the fantastic creation!
